This book promises mermaids. It delivers metaphorically. In the context that you're reading the book, this is unusual, and at least you're not pandered to or forced to endure fluff...but this is the sort of book that is "good for you" more than it is enjoyable.
Remember Terabithia? If you loved that book, give this one a shot. Otherwise, try something else by Louise Cooper and save this book for when you don't mind a vitaminy aftertaste.
