It is a big book tat is very nicely done. Nice big pictures. Very good quality. I believe that for people whose mother tongue is English, it is perfect. English for me is second language, so the definitions were a bit complicated and the whole book goes very much into detail, sometimes ommitting more general terms like simply "trousers", etc. and instead it just lists the many types of trousers. But I anyway learned a lot already about the different fruits and vegetables, etc. So I am still very happy that I have it and it is also great for translation purposes where I need to find technical terms that I might not even know in my native language, so I just open this book at the subject, and I will find all the words relating to it!

I recommend this book not only to non-natives and beginners, but also to anyone who is in need of knowing what the details, we usually never ask about, are called.

This book contains great art and a wide variety of sections and very small details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awsome! 7 Jun. 2012
By Narcyz Knap - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I had used the online version of Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary before I bought myself the book. I am more than satisfied with both. It is absolutely amazing how neatly such detailed vocabulary, containing actually 20,000 definitions and 6,000 high quality pictures, can be packed over 952 pages. The book is divided into 17 sections, including Astronomy, Earth, Plants, Animals, Human Anatomy, Food & Kitchen, House, Do-It-Yourself And Gardening, Clothing, Accessories, Arts And Architecture, Communications And Office Automation, Transport And Machinery, Energy, Science, Society, Sports And Games plus the Index of Terms at the end. I guess it is a wonderful reference for the native speakers of English, as well as a great source of knowledge for advanced learners of American English like myself (hopefully :-) . I am trying to raise my son Chris (4 yo) kind of bilingually and I have only spoken English with hime ever since he was born. As you can imagine, speaking English as my second language I had many problems finding the right term to name different objects around me, not to mention discriminating between British and American English terms. The Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary has helped me along and looks like it will be still my good companion in many years to come. All in all, I highly recommend both the online version and the book edition!

5.0 out of 5 stars a resource for many different viewers 17 Dec. 2010

I find that this book is a useful tool to use with my ESL students. They can learn the names of the tools they use at work, and words for the items in their daily lives in an easy to understand format. It is a marvelous teaching tool, and has saved me hours of Internet searching and printing to prepare lessons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Falling in love with a......Dictionary 23 Jun. 2010
By Roberto J. Lancellotti - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Whenever one thinks of " Webster Dictionary " one visualizes a big , heavy book, terribly serious and with thousands of very accurate definitions explaining, or trying to, origins and meanings of words. Useful of course, but almost always dry as a pile of sand and not meant for young children. What a revelation Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary is !!!!!! Scientific, explanatory and extremely useful but in such a novel way.... Children love it, middle age people adore it and everybody wonders why nobody had ever thought of creating it any time sooner. Luckily it is now here, for all of us to use and enjoy and I am sure it will soon be in every home, classroom and library. Well done Merriam-Webster, and as they say, " Better late than never "

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for the Home 15 Feb. 2010

We have been delighted with the quality of the pictures in this book. It is enjoyable to look at, and it makes a good learning resource for the home school. Note - there is a section on anatomy with frontal nudity. These pages can be stapled shut or removed if you wish - don't miss the rest of the book! There are chapters on Astronomy, the Earth, Plants, Animals, Food and Kitchen, House, Gardening, Do-It-Yourself, Arts and Architecture, Communications, Transport and Machinery, Energy, Science, Society, and Sports and Games. Our boys ages 17 and 12 loved the pictures of sailing ships, weapons(modern and ancient), sports, architecture and animals. I loved the pictures of cuts of meat and types of mushrooms, spices and cheeses. Very educational!
