5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific shoes! Love them! 26 Jan. 2015

I searched and researched all types and brands of shoes/boots before deciding to try these and I'm really glad I did. I love merrell brand and have several pairs. I normally wear an 8.5 med in merrell but lately some of those have been feeling too small. I think my feet have grown a bit with age. I got a 9 in these thinking I could sneak my orthotics in them and I wanted them roomy. First off, they came overnight. On a Saturday! Yes, delivered on Sunday morning. Fastest delivery I have ever had. And, better yet, they are terrific! The only strange thing is that they evidently are from their barefoot line and they do not have a removable insole. In fact, they have no insole at all! I thought I got a pair that was missing the insole, but when I watched the video on Zappos for this shoe, there isn't one. So, I thought, oh dear, these will have to go back. I have foot problems galore including arthritis, bunion ( one repaired, one not), lower falling arches, etc. However, to my surprise, these not only fit, they feel great! Arch supported, plenty of room in the toe box, snug in the heel, nice soft grip on my ankle, VERY flexible (frankly don't know how another reviewer called these stiff), cushy comfort, and pretty warm. I can put my lighter orthotic in them as well if I want to, which right now I'm not because im interested in trying them without. I will say these are gym shoe like comfort so with that said, I don't know how great they would be for hefty hiking on rocks and stones. Soles are sticky and have good traction, however, you can feel the ground beneath so don't choose these if you need lots of support and stone protection. I am going to use them for walking my dogs on grass, sand and dirt paths, and asphalt so I don't think I'll have a problem. Definitely a lighter weight hiking type bootie, which for me, is perfect. Keep in mind pricing tho as I actually saw them on Amazon today, Monday, for $40 less than I paid. Amazon was great and their customer service is good and even tho I paid more, I'm very happy. PS - love the color even tho I'm not a fan of pink.

4.0 out of 5 stars Order a half to a full size up - but a great boot! 28 Oct. 2014

From reading other reviews I ordered a size 9, when I am in between an 8 and 8 1/2. That was the correct choice and they fit perfectly right out of the box. They arrived just in time for a trip to the Smoky Mountains last week and in their first wearing I hiked an 8.3 mile, 21.58 (strenuous) rated trail and I loved the way they hiked. They are pretty light, and may not be the best choice for extreme backpacking, but for this sort of day hiking, they are perfect. They gave good cushion and motion support over rough and slippery rocks, roots and terrain. They got wet traversing some running streams and my feet stayed totally dry. I would have given them a 5-star rating, however, by about mile 7 they started hurting my right ankle, which ended up with a little bruise. I don't know if I can blame the boots, however, because my last hiking shoes did the same thing. I must have a big ankle bone! So the next day, (a moderate rated 6 mile waterfall hike) I just wore an extra sock on my right foot, made sure the boots were laced up good and snug, and I was good to go. They appear well made, are sturdy and are not too nerdy to wear later with your jeans for some celebratory beers. I am happy with my purchase and would recommend these boots.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings... 27 Jun. 2015
By Jamie - Published on Amazon.com
I really really wanted to LOVE these shoes. They are super nice looking and with a name like Merrell, I thought I would be getting superb shoes, especially when you consider the $140.00 price tag on these babies. When I first got them, the arch felt a bit funny, like it was too high, but after a week of braking them in, that went away. I took these on a trip to the Yucatan penisula trekking through Mayan ruins and seaside towns. After three months of living with these shoes, and quite a few miles, this is what I have found.

The Good:
* Build quality. The shoe is put together very well, quality materials used throughout.
* Styling. The subdued black and gray are nice enough to wear at work and look great casual too.
* Waterproofing. They repel water like nobody's business.
* Super easy clean up. I got these things DIRTY doing atv trails in the jungle. Quick rinse of water in the hotel sink and viola! they looked good as new and dried super fast.

The Bad:
* Shock Absorption. These things are the worst pair of shoes that I have ever owned when it comes to shock absorbency. My feet are killing me after four to six hours in them. Tired and sore feet, legs and back after a full day in them. I wear between a 8.5 to 9 depending on how the shoe is cut, so I ordered these in 9 just to be sure they fit. I am glad that I did, it gave me enough room to fit some shock absorbing inserts into them and now I can wear them about 12 hours before my feet get sore or tired.
* Soles are SUPER SLICK on wet surfaces. Tile floors at work are treacherous when wet, street pavement when wet is not great and I even totally face-planted on a wet sidewalk in Mexico with these on. For a rugged hiking shoe I find it extremely disappointing that these shoes are so terrible in the wet.
About me: I have average feet. No arch problems, no plantar fasiwhatever, etc. etc. etc.
5.0 out of 5 stars Lighter weight, waterproof and comfortable 13 Aug. 2016

I bought these boots after I injured my ankle. I needed a pair for walking around Europe using both a boot brace and alternating with an ankle brace and using crutches. These were perfect for matching the height with a "boot." Even when I wasn't using my "boot," I wore both hiking boots for support and spent all day for 2 weeks in these(either one or both). I went up half a size to fit my ankle brace in one, and wore two socks on my good foot. I liked the color, too, since it's not the most fashionable having to wear hiking boots, but they worked. Also, they were more lightweight than others I tried. I liked that they were waterproof since it was very rainy in Copenhagen. Even thought my ankle is better, I can still wear these with thicker socks (or two thin ones) for any hiking I do in the future. I bought 2 pairs of Merrells to try and these were my favorites.

Buy at least 1.5 larger than your regular shoe size. I wear 7.5-8 and I bought 9, still small, need more room in the area. Merrell are good for regular (not very wet and snow) days and for easy to medium difficulty hiking. The grab to the ground is not the best, rainy days may slip bad, snow days micro spikes are a must. Bottom is thin, which can be a good thing for short distance hike, long distance is no. Ankle fits good. Shoe laces are slippery, but make sure to double tie, tie over tie. Color doesn't matter, the sides are durable, water proof is great, can last at least 4-5 hours in rain.
