The shoes have now done about 170 off-road miles and my husband has only two gripes: 1) There isn't really enough grip for true off-road running especially in wet, boggy Scotland and 2) the upper isn't protected close to the sole around the sides of the foot and heather and bracken take their toll on the soft mesh like material.
On the positive side they are supremely comfortable, nice wide toe box, they fit like...well, like a glove and apparently don't come off even when shin-deep in bog! He reckons they would be alright for road-running, but not great. The other plus, is apparently the amount of feedback that he gets through the sole of these shoes plus they're grippy on rock, grass and good trails and tracks, i.e. forestry trails and tracks etc. Oh, they drain really well when running through rivers...apparently!
Not for fell or hill running but great for proper tracks and trails.
As winter starts to close its icy grip I imagine I will be running more and more shod, and I suspect most of these runs will be done in the Merrell's. Over the last few months I have run more and more in the Merrell's. The zero heel raise, thin sole and huge toes box have been put together brilliantly. I notice very little difference between these then the five fingers. But they are considerably more comfortable. The interior of the shoe is wonderful and the more you run the more comfortable you feel in them. As with all minimal foot ware I would not run in these full time because being barefoot ensures I keep my form and allow me to run well when I put shoes on. The Merrell's are great for the longer runs or when I just don't feel like being barefoot. They excel on the rough stuff, are super grippy and really allow you to go where sometimes you just can't go barefoot comfortably.
I am a Euro 44 and ordered the UK size 10.
Buy them you won't regret it.
I honestly can't praise this shoe enough - I know many reviews say the shoe is too narrow but I have wide toes and have absolutely no issues with these. Far more comfortable than my fivefingers for off road use and perfect for use abroad being fast drying, extremely adaptable and very light.
6 month update: my new pair are going strong but only used off road, still using my old pair for road running and I have a pair of Excursion gloves for casual use which are very comfortable, stylish and slip on and off with ease. Don't hesitate to buy either pair of shoes!
Edit 1st August: Well after me saying in the review I'd take it slow I went off like gazelle and picked up an injury, nothing to do with the shoes I knew I was putting stress on places that didn't usually get it but I kept running in them. I had to give them a break for a few weeks and only just back in them now. So be warned break yourself in slowly.
One other thing... I suggest getting some thin trainer socks to wear with them as after a few weeks of use they start to stink I'm in two minds whether to wash them as its debatable if the insole would stand up to it.
