Point to note is that I am probably not the first person to try them on, one shoe had already got creases in the suede leather upper and the balls of paper that are usually found in the boot to stop them being squashed were missing.
While the boots looked good the fit was not ideal for my feet because of the narrow foot bed around the small toes. I had my feet measured a few days ago and was told that I was a size 12, and so for Merrells I usually go for a 12.5 or 13 as they run small.
The size 12.5 is the correct size in these for my foot length and anything larger would have had my foot moving around in the boot and cause blisters.
The boots have a good sole with aggressive tread. The uppers are generally good quality but there is an awful lot of patchwork stitching. Stitching leaves holes and these can be weak points in the waterproofing.
Two major points to note about the comfort levels of the shoe and I have attached photographs.
The front of the boot has a rubber bumper stitch attached to it. Inside the boot I can physically feel the stitching through the lining and it is in exactly the position of where my small toes are. Wearing the boot I can also feel the stitching and this will rub especially as it is where the foot bends when walking.
The second point to note is that the sole isn't quite glued properly to the uppers just in the same place as where the small toe would be. The photograph shows a gap and this will surely widen in use allowing water in.
In conclusion I would say I am disappointed, a little more care with where the seams are would make this boot so much better. Better quality control might have prevented the gap between the sole and the uppers. For some feet they might just be ideal, they are after all a good price now they are reduced, but not for my feet I’m afraid.
Following the usual advice for Merrells, I initially ordered a pair of 13's, which is one size up from my 'regular' size and typically fits fine (I have some Moabs in 13 and they're blissfully comfortable). But, had to send the first pair of Norsehunds back and exchange for a 14, because they were too narrow, as well as a tad too short, to the point of pinching my toes. The 14's are still not *quite* as broad as I would've ideally liked, but are otherwise a decent fit in thin to medium socks.
I would advise, if you have wide feet or habitually wear two pairs of socks with your hiking boots, to go maybe one and a half or even two sizes up, rather than just one. These boots are not as generously proprtioned as other Merrells, and do taper quite significantly towards the toes.
Other than that, the boots have a nice rigidity - very solid ankle support - and the cushioning and sole are superb; good and grippy. I like the D-rings for gaiters and the leather construction. Bought these for winter walking, so we'll see how they hold up....
