This barley malt extract is 100% pure with nothing else added. Malted barley extract is made by sprouting and heating the barley grain. Once the grain begins to sprout, they generate enzymes which convert the barley's starch into sugar. This sugar is extracted from the barley by soaking the grain in water. The produce of this process is barley malt extract, which is dark in colour but has a gentle sweetness and syrupy consistency.

I know that malting barley produces enzymes that have health benefits but I do not know how the 'extract of barley' was made and I am doubtful about the quality because the words 'extract of barley' come first, indicating that most of the product is not made of malted barley. The product also states that it comes from more than one country.
I have searched on Amazon to see if I can find any malt extract that is 100 per cent malted barley but this information seems to be conveniently missing.
I thought Meridian was a quality brand but it appears that they, perhaps like other UK suppliers, have succumbed to the food scientists to make a product cheaper by removing some of the quality. At the same time, it is not made very obvious to the consumer that they are getting a degraded product. SUMA, this is not a wholefood in the accepted sense of the word, it is not whole malt extract.
Meridian do an organic version of Barley Malt extract but it is not clear if this is 100 per cent malted barley. Does anyone know a UK supplier of 100 per cent malted barley. Note, I am not using this for beer making. I bought it to make malt loaves.
I normally buy locally but it not always easy to get into the town and the shop doesn't always have stock, and this was cheaper.
Downside of this purchase was that on packing at the point of manufacture one of the jars had a lose lid. Result was about half the jar leaked out when it was on its way to me!
