The moment Mercenary arrived at my door I was eager to listen to the CD as I am a very big Bolt Thrower fan. From the opening track Zeroed I was drawn in by the brilliance that is Bolt Thrower, each track is skillfully crafted filled with lyrics that conjure up images of war - in a way that only Bolt Thrower know how. If you are looking for something a little more complex than your average death/grindcore metal band then Bolt Thrower is the band you want, with no better place to start than the album Mercenary. The fact that the band remastered the album 3 times shows in the quality of all tracks on this album.

From the moment the CD starts, the move to Metal Blade is apparent. The quality of production really shines through, which lends itself well to Bolt Thrower's distinctive Grind Core style. Every song contained on 'Mercenary' works well, my favourite one though would have to be 'No Guts, No Glory' Love the SFX at the start! On the whole it shows Bolt Thrower has come of age and has created some epic tracks which demand to be played LOUD!!!

HASH(0x8b79b7f8) out of 5 stars Wow... just wow! 30 Nov. 2000
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This CD is simply amazing! I purchased it nearly a year ago, and it still gets heavy rotation in my CD player!
Though not typically a fan of the "Death metal/grindcore" genre of music, Bolt Thrower pulls it off in a way that makes it enjoyable anyway. "Mercenary" takes you inside the mind of a military man who is trained to do nothing but kill, and boy do they do a good job!
Highly brutal, each song is a masterful portrayal of what it is like to be on the killing fields. This non-stop barrage of pounding guitars, thrashing drums, and growled vocals gives one the feeling of the anger and hatred coursing through the veins of a man at war.
Brutally honest, each song tells the listener of how the evils of war work on the minds of mankind. Songs like "Zeroed" speak of the deaths on a battlefield in a negative, sometimes sarcastic way. "Reduced to Zero... the sum of mankind." With lyrics like that, one gets a bleak view of what the future holds for humanity we allow the destruction to continue.
I would recommend this to ANY fan of any sort of metal, or just heavy music in general. This album is a masterpiece sure to please all who listen!

HASH(0x8b79bc84) out of 5 stars Thrash, death and doom in one heavy stew 12 April 2015
By Scott Hedegard - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
As death bands go, Bolt Thrower doesn't get a lot of press, but in the UK they're pretty big, which stands to reason as they're from Coventry. To look at the cover and logo one might thing you'd be dealing with a Priest/Sabaton power metal or eighties thrash album, but you'd be wrong. Having never heard them before but knowing of them and a good rep, I found this CD supposedly used but looked like it had never been played or very little. I suspect the buyer was expecting more traditional metal, instead of the deathfest that resides in the binary codes.
Bolt Thrower were a punk hardcore style band at first, but with time honed their axes, tuned them down, and by "Mercenary", have developed a sound that goes down well with those who like bands who tread the blurry lines of a style of metal too categorized for its own good. I immediately appreciated the tone of the guitars, thick and doomy, reminiscent of "Arise"-era Sepultura, and the thrash influence of those legendary outfits who also showed just how closely related thrash and death ultimately are, usually the only difference being grunted vocals, like Slayer, Exodus or Sodom, to name a few. One the death side, you can also put Bolt Thrower in the Carcass/Vader vein, and be just as accurate.
Which means to say after all these comparisons is that "Mercenary", while not exactly creating anything unusual, are a reliably heavy chopping forge hammer of a band, no fancy frills, or excessive lead guitar wanking, solos being slower and melodic, a nice touch, heavy as any doom band and enjoyable, the lyrics of the album subject matter notwithstanding, which you have to read, as the grunt vocals are hard to understand, but that's death metal for you.

HASH(0x8b79bfe4) out of 5 stars Masterful. 8 Nov. 2009

This is what death metal should sound like! Crushing, heavy, and will vocals that sound as if a guy got fused with a lion then let a blood-chilling and hair prickling roar! Karl is in top form here, his vocals are amazing and he just come at you with them like a MERCENARY on a mission to growl and destroy!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Alright what I said may not have made any sense, but I don't care this album is good and you'll buy it if you have any taste in metal at all.

HASH(0x8b79bd98) out of 5 stars Bolt Thrower has hit its stride. Perhaps their best. 15 Oct. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This is a great CD that gets better with each listen. Though not necessarily innovative, the music is so perfectly executed and the songs so carefully crafted that I just can't stop listening to it. The song quality is so consistent that it's impossible to rate any song as being better than the others. They're all great. I think this release signifies that BT has just hit it's stride.
