As an experienced coach and mentor for NHS Doctors I would recommend this book. It gives you all the really important basics and lots of insightful examples to aid your development, whether you provide mentoring formally or informally. It is a highly accessible introduction to the world of mentoring, but that does not mean it is easy material to absorb, or requires little effort to think about. Starr introduces the reader to concepts that are deep and complex, but she does this clearly and with practical exercises, which is very engaging. This book fills a gap in the mentoring market because it helps you explore the relationship and behavioural aspect of your practice as a mentor which is crucial to creating the best environment for people to learn for themselves.

Julie Starr has followed previous successes with The Coaching Manual and Brilliant coaching, with a new title focusing on mentoring. As a mentor myself, I liked the clear and simple explanations of what it is, how it differs from coaching, consultancy, managing, teaching or any of the activities that commonly confuse this whole topic.

I like Starr’s writing style, its simple, clear and yet often challenging. Throughout, Starr uses reflective questions that constantly reminded me to connect a specific section to me and my own mentoring. The checklists, exercises and succinct chapter summaries all helped to keep me thinking and keep me reading.

I particularly liked the ‘Mentoring Map’ which uses the idea of a journey to explain the process of setting up a relationship, setting out, and explaining each step of the way in a useful amount of detail. One thing I used was the advice on how to prepare for a mentoring session, which included getting our ego out of the way (not as easy as it sounds!). In addition, as well as all the principles and process of mentoring, there’s a great section to help us overcome the pitfalls that can reduce the effectiveness of the session. There’s also the offer of free online materials and they sounded useful.

In short, it’s a great resource for those who are already a mentor, a coach, a consultant or manager. Having read other books on this topic, I think this fills a gap in knowledge, whilst adding fresh perspectives. Plus it explains what Gandalf, Mary Poppins and Nicole Scherzinger have in common – no mean feat!

This is another brilliant book by Julie.

The Mentoring Manual does what it says on the cover. It's a step by step guide and great resource for anyone who mentors others, or manages a mentoring programme. It provides practical insights and helpful guidance on mentoring, and the benefits to individuals, mentors and the organisation.

I've read several books on mentoring, but with this book Julie has really got to the heart and soul of mentoring.
I love that Julie goes into depth about the relationship, and how this differs from coaching and leading, which many people often get confused with. There is great practical and an easy to follow framework that will help you set up a great mentoring relationship, that will benefit both the mentee and also the mentor. Top marks and fully recommended.

Perhaps like other coaching practitioners I looked at Julie Starr’s 2014 Mentoring Manual with some concern that my admired gutsy ‘say it as it is’ Starr of Brilliant Coaching and other great books was moving over to the dark side…. moving into the realms of increasing dependency and encouraging childlike reliance on powerful benefactors with a campaign to encourage mentoring! As with most unsupported assumptions it wasn’t until I got to the end of the first page that I realized I had believed some dodgy thinking, rather than the facts. This is an excellent read as it not only encourages engagement with key issues needed to make mentoring work; but in reflective practice to encourage the reader to clearly explore when and how mentoring could be the best option.
The accessible style of Starr reaches out to everyone; Hagrid, the mentor to Harry Potter, and other examples connect the reader to the presence in all our lives of a mentor. The qualities of benevolence and respect are carefully explored together with professionalism and accountability. The book held my attention and whetted my appetite to find out more about how, as a coach, mentoring continues to work in shaping our practice both with supervision and in making us even more effective professionals.
