Top Customer Reviews

Format: Hardcover
There are few books that are dedicated to studying mental maps in international foreign policy and this book is a welcomed edition. The various contributors analyse the personal mental maps of many national leaders in the years ranging from the end of WW1 to WW2.
On the whole the different essays are quite interesting, even though there is a lack of overall coherence in the organization of the texts.
However, due to the diminutive amount of studies in this area, the book is lacking in the necessary theoretical conceptions of mental maps. The concept if synthetically defined and there is no explanation of how mental maps are formed or how they influence the foreign policy making process. The lack of this information allows for the attribution of only 4 stars.
In general it is a highly recommended book. Students looking for practical studies of individual decision-makers mental maps will appreciate the book. The various individual essays are well organized, structured and historically sound (Nevertheless, references and endnotes are lacking in some necessary detail). More advanced scholars of mental maps might have to look to other publications to complement the more theoretical issues.
