Dust jacket not price clipped or marked or torn with a little creasing to upper edge, front lower edge and minor traces of storage to rear. 271pp. Detailed and very well illustrated study of the Irish workers who came to Britain looking for work firstly in the 18th century. They began by building our canals and later our railways and were originally known as 'Navigators' and later 'Navvies'. Fairly scarce in the UK.

Having been bought up in North London and working for the EEB there and in Stevenage this book brought back many great memories of my early working live.The Lads waiting for the vans in Camden Town,and Tottenham. RS Kennedy in Watford, John Galvin of Harrow etc.(and hoping to get into the cafe before they did!) Also the pubs and dance halls in Holloway and Cricklerwood. But this book it is not just memory lane.It is a very comprehensive,well researched and an excellent history of those who lived and worked on the the numerous undertakings during the greatest era of British civil engineering. A great social history and a very good read.
