The CD is the soundtrack from six episodes of the TV series, produced in 1974. Each episode is between seven and eight minutes long, giving a run time of 45 minutes overall. The audio has been remastered by Mark Ayres and sounds crystal-clear, and you can't tell unless you pay special attention that it comes from an old source.
Arthur Lowe's narration is lovely. He takes a much softer tone than his Captain Mainwaring persona, and has a lovely warm grandfather-ish voice that is absolutely charming. The sound effects and other noises, however, are rather limited by the relatively low standards of 1974 TV.
The surprise for me was that these are, quite literally, the soundtrack from the TV series. They aren't re-edited, and no additional narration was added- it really is just six of the TV episodes without the pictures. Because many old kids TV shows were essentially narrated audio stories with pictures added for decoration (from Jackanory to CBeebies bedtime stories), then mostly this works and you don't end up needing the pictures to get the tale. However the result is quite slow- the narration gets paused for something to happen on screen, and then Arthur Lowe describes what has happened, and as you can't see the animation, there end up being a few slight pregnant pauses.Read more ›
Arthur Lowe's narration, with its archaic bourgeois tones, is relaxed and assured. The sound effects are amusing and the music a reminder of a much simpler time.
As you'd expect, it's much calmer than the recent French reboot and true to the books. With a little preparation, there's scope for reading along.
The packaging is attractive, with the front and back LP covers reproduced as the front and back of the insert, with the notes enlarged on the inside. Yes, there could have a been more - maybe a booklet or a foldout - but it would be out of keeping with the general feel of the thing.
The CD is designed to look like a record to great effect.
My only (very minor) quibble is the mix. It keeps most of the warmth of the vinyl but seems to lose something at the top end. I haven't tried it out in the car but it might not sound as good there, particularly when moving, as on the dining room stereo.
Oh, yes, the littl'un loved it. We only got it this afternoon and we've heard it all the way through...twice.
This is a `Vintage Beeb' reproduction of the original vinyl, first released in 1980. It is the soundtrack to the animated series `Mr. Men Stories', created by Roger Hargreaves and narrated by Arthur Lowe. It contains 6 episodes, each about 7 minutes in length. Each episode starts with the theme music from the series, then Arthur Lowe's rich, expressive, avuncular voice starts to narrate the tales. Each tale follows the adventures of one of the Mr Men - Messrs Funny, Dizz, Bump, Fussy, Topsy-Turvey and Small, and how each is in some way transformed. Each tale is funny and beautifully told by Lowe. The disc itself has been made to look like an old vinyl record, complete with the old BBC logo, and the insert is a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve. It's a nice touch for the nostalgia market, and the whole thing is very well done. There are no liner notes to speak of, just a track listing and copyright details.
It was a real pleasure to listen to this again, and I can see it being a real hit with young children (from personal experience I can attest that I loved it when I was a 4-6 yr old, and I hope my own children will like it when they are old enough). 5 stars from me.
Every parent knows how useful children's audio books can be for car journeys, short or long. Each short story (circa 7 minutes, around 45 mins in total) focuses on a new character and contains a simple moral message. They are intended for primary school-age children.
If you're not familiar with the Mr Men or the 1970s animated BBC series, you're in for a treat; if you are, it'll be a trip down memory lane. The CD includes the stories about Mr Funny, Mr Dizzy, Mr Bump, Mr Fussy, Mr Topsy-Turvy and Mr Small written by one of Britain's most successful children's authors, Roger Hargreaves (d. 1988), narrated by Dad's Army's Captain Mainwaring actor Arthur Lowe (d. 1982). Lowe has excellent diction and, as an actor, brings the characters of each Mr Man to life with a mixture of humour and stuffy formality as if a friendly grandfatherly figure were reading these stories to you. The sound has been remastered from the original 1970s version and is top quality.
These audio books are the voiceover by Lowe for the original animated series by Flicks Films with the original Mr Men theme music by Joe Campbell and Tony Hymas. As such, you'll hear the story but won't see the pictures.Read more ›

This is as I remember it from TV, but without the visuals it didn't engage my 30 month old. He just wasn't that bothered. Read morePublished 10 months ago by John R. Wade
