Product Description

Product Description

Elvis was initially tagged a County & Western singer by local media in the South; indeed he was a huge fan of Roy Acuff, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Snow et al - credible country names popular throughout the US in the early 1950s. His main point of reference musically however, was The Blues, in which he'd been steeped even before his family moved to Memphis when the future King was just 12 years old. Race radio stations across the Southern States were accessible at the far end of the dial and from these he learned many of the tunes that would later form part of his repertoire. Once the Presleys were ensconced in Tennessee's largest city, Elvis was further informed and inspired by the sounds and sights he witnessed on Memphis notorious blues hangout, Beale Street - home to any number of juke-joints , record stores replete with listening booths and nightclubs in which white faces were rarely seen. When Presley wandered into Sun Studios in 1954 and finally persuaded owner Sam Phillips let him audition for the label, the session was initially deemed uninspiring and unfruitful until - late into the night - Elvis began goofing around on his acoustic 6 string to Arthur Crudup's 1946 blues That's All Right. When local musicians Scotty Moore and Bill Black began playing along, Phillips declared he had finally found the sound he had been looking for, for so long a white man who could really sing the blues. The rest - as they say - is history. This 2CD set brings together over 50 of the original blues recordings that Elvis had been influenced by in his pre-fame days and which helped form the blueprint for the most dazzling and popular musical career of all time. Complete with extensive liner notes detailing the reference points of each cut, this collection is the ultimate compilation of The Songs That Drove Him Wild just as it says on the tin.

So what is this? It is ostensibly 58 tracks that drove Elvis wild during his teenage years say 1948-52 or thereabouts. Ok we get a handful of well known blues eg Arthur Crudup, Rufus Thomas, Junior Parker and the Blue Flames and BB King. The rest however are pretty obscure to my ears and unless you really dig the blues you may well find this two cd set quite a hard listen. It also begs the question how do we know these tracks were driving the 15 year old Elvis wild? We do know he really rated Arthur Crudup and BB King but what about Billy Love, Sammie Lewis and Eddie Snow?? There only seems to be tracks from black blues artists on this set so clearly the white hillbilly music and white gospel of say Hank Snow and the Statesmen Quartet has not been included. I would have liked to hear Hank Snow's 'I'm Gonna Bid My Blues Goodbye for example. This isn't a bad set and certainly excellent value, however if you're not really into the blues it probably won't be your cup of tea. Nevertheless it warrants 4 stars. none of the songs on the cd feature elvis, I feel that this cd is falsely advertised and is a complete rip off.

I'm a huge Elvis fan, so when I seen his picture on the cover of that CD, wow, someone discovered some old tapes with Elvis singing the Blues. Once I received the CD, than discovered it was his favorite Blues Artists singing THEIR songs. I truly enjoy listening to the Blues so I'm not totally disappointed. I'm not disappointed in this purchase, just letting you know what your purchasing.

HASH(0x8ab69288) out of 5 stars Great Compilation 4 Oct. 2013
By Jack Frost - Published on Amazon.com

I enjoyed the track selection here and in many cases I hadn't heard the originals of the cuts which Elvis covered.

It includes over 50 songs which either inspired Elvis or were covered by him. Just check out the track-list and if this kind of thing inspires you then go for it...
