Women's Suffrage Movement in Great Britain.
Both school children and university students could gain quite a lot from these replica
pieces of ephemera, which are all good primary source materials for the years leading up
to the time when all women finally got the right to vote in 1929.
The pack contains a copy of "Votes for Women", the 8 page weekly newspaper of the era,
dated 1915, containing articles about the progress of the fight for votes, details of next
meetings and adverts for Swan & Edgar, Selfridges and other stores. It is approximately
30 cm by 21 cm in size.
One particularly interesting document is a copy of a Metropolitan Police charge sheet,
given to Florence Haig charging her with "wilful damage" in 1912.
A Memorandum from the Governor of Holloway Prison to the Prison Commission refuting
complaints of women detained in Holloway is quite interesting, some 4 pages in length.
Other items include, a membership ticket for the suffrage movement, posters, including one
which shows a woman being forced fed, and a flyer for The March on Buckingham Palace to
send a Deputation to The King !
Replica postcards and cigarette card size pictures make up the rest of this pack.
Some of the items are very small and those on thinner paper might require laminating to
protect them from wear and tear if they are to be used for classroom handouts.
Like the other packs that I have reviewed, these items are all worth buying as they bring
life to what could be seen as just another history lesson for some children.
A generally good product, if a little small, and certainly not a Toy.
