I really look forward to seeing what will happen to Livi in the Harbourside series. Well done Melissa.
Wonderful account of the relationships among a group of friends, and a wonderful reflection about the meaning of being family and of loving and sharing love with others. Powerful story about the power of love and about the ways people develop to deal with the pain of losing loved ones.
The pace of the novel is quite adequate, since it lets the reader know new information little by little, giving you space for trying to guess, although the twists are so unexpected that it is difficult to guess what is going to happen next. The building of suspense is so good that the story keeps you hooked almost from the beginning.
The characters are well depicted and seem quite real. Using a different register for Olivia, so she sounds like a real teenager.
If I have to find a flaw to this enjoyable and emotional book is that sometimes I found some vocabulary a bit repetitive. We love synonyms!
Some aspects of the book; many will find offensive. The idea that gay men can be turned straight by a sexual encounter with a female is frankly ludicrous. Describing an unborn foetus as a grub is also something many; including myself will find insensitive.
A very short story stretched into a wearisome full length book. You can skip page after page and not lose your place in what little plot there is. Unrealistic, underdeveloped and selfish unlikeable characters were quite frankly not believable. Intelligent readers with an IQ above 80 should steer well clear of this atrocious book (I will not grace it with the title `novel').
The book comes to a sudden pointless end, basically leaving much of the story unresolved. A total waste of time.
For that reason I struggled to get through it, much like Anne of Green Gables but like that classic book I felt I was better for reading it.
The book has overtiones of the movie, Stepmom with Juilia Roberts, Megan's struiggle to go on with 'normal' life even as her normal life is drawing to a close. I struggled with the many differing POVs but once you got used to that it was easy reading. Megan, Olvia, Holly and Peter are open, raw, and have real character flaws. You can identify with the characters, I know people like them and that's the sign of a good book when you can look around and find similar characters and situations in the real world.
Oddly enough I was relieved it didn't have the same ending as the movie Ghost, which I found over the top. You're left wondering if it was all real or just imagined. For those like myself who struggle with books dripping with emotions I'd encourage you to keep reading. You'll hopefully come away with a different perspective on life. What would you do if you had a few weeks or months left to live?
Well worth the read and it would translate easily to a cinematic format.
It's a story that looks at the relationship between mother and daughter, as well as that of best friends Megan and Holly; and how the illness not only effects them, but the underlying issues that bubble along the way (which makes for compelling reading) - such as who is Megan's father? What is the dark secret Holly is hiding?
A thought-provoking read that is beautifully written and really puts things in perspective.
