However with a bit of ingenuity and patience I have a working system. This means that I can video good quality content with my camera and record sound (sadly only mono) on my phone which doesn't have lots of wind messing it up.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and by using an app on that to record the sound from this mic I can combine the two on my PC later. The mic won't simply plug into the phone though. I needed to purchase a gadget to enable me to utilise the 4-pole socket in my phone:
The StarTech 3.5mm 4-pole headset & microphone splitter works well.
All I need to do now is to find something to secure to my tripod so that I can stop the phone dangling off the top of the camera via the lead. I already have a suitable stereo extension lead to help with this.
One issue I do have though is that it is difficult to place your eye to the eye-piece when the mic is attached to your camera. I may invest in something that allows me to place it a little further from the hot-shoe position such as this:
I went on a shoot indoors and outdoors with it. I asked the person I was interviewing if we could do two takes of everything, one with the internal mic alternating with a lapel mic and then the MegaGear mic. Absolutely disgraceful quality sound. Hissing and humming noises and even dismounting it and holding the mic 30cm away (bear in mind it has to be plugged in) didn't make any difference.
Keep away from this product OR buy it and print out a return label whilst you are waiting for delivery because you will send it back.
This microphone is made of cheap poor quality materials - how do I get a refund and claim for the cost of the repair to my camera?
Do not buy this product, especially as there is no light to indicate if it is working or not.
