Product Description

Tobe Hulbert s life sucks. He s a recent high-school graduate living in Washington with his grandfather. He works out of a vintage hot dog truck, and his only friend is his overweight 12-year-old neighbour. In the dog-days of summer, his only escape is obsessively watching videos of his fantasy girl: Monica Velour, the most famous adult-film star of the 1980s.

Browsing her fansite one afternoon, Tobe discovers that Monica is making a rare live appearance at a strip club in rural Indiana. With nothing stopping him, he hits the road to meet the woman of his dreams. Expecting his fantasy, Tobe is instead confronted with a harsh reality: Monica is a 49-year-old mom who lives in a trailer park, and her life is nothing like he imagined it would be. The last thing Monica needs is another complication in her life, but Tobe is determined to do whatever it takes to get close to her.

In this 2010 fantasy drama, 17-year-old Tobe Hulbert (Dustin Ingram) is nerdy and socially inept with no real friends. Spending his free time with his porn collection, he fantasises about Monica Velour (Kim Cattrall), who was the hottest porn actress in the late 1970s through the '80s, so when he learns Monica will be appearing at The Petting Zoo Gentleman's Club he sells up and goes to meet her. But will the reality match the fantasy?
The opening titles do a great job of setting the scene and mood of the movie detailing Monica’ past through a collage of news reels, film covers and other media, before cutting to the main focus of the film and you’re into the main story within 20 minutes. This isn’t the outright comedy the blurb suggests as it can be quite painful, sad and thought provoking as the stark reality kicks in, being more a dark sit-com in places. Kim Cattrall excels as the ageing star who realises her beauty has faded and bravely avoids her usual make-up and a far cry from her role in ‘Porky’s’, while Ingram is perfect as the besotted nerd.
The single disc loads to a basic main menu offering just play, scene selection and trailer. Rated 15 this features some topless dancing, the F word and some adult themes including an adult video store, strip club, masturbation, prostitution, drug taking and drunkenness, but nothing graphic [other than an old mans backside] but always avoids being smutty. A good quirky 30s soundtrack, some great autumnal scenes contrasting with the bleak settings and a tale of two dysfunctional people striking up an unlikely friendship. It’s a movie with heart, but avoids being overly sentimental, with a good mix of humour balancing out the bleakness, but above all it’s about the clash between fantasy and reality. A must for Cattrall fans and anyone who likes a ‘kitchen sink’ drama and a good twist ending.

Kim cattrall at her best, amazing film. A great actress playing a part that was made for her, kept me interested the whole time

I bought this DVD without having previously seen the film, mainly because I am an admirer of Kim Cattrall. She gives a very good performance as an overweight former soft-porn star who is now living in a trailer park. Unfortunately her talent is wasted in a puerile film. The story is told from the viewpoint of a 17-year-old who has a crush on Cattrall's character, and the humour is definitely aimed at 14-year-old boys. The nadir is a scene when the camera lingers on an elderly man (the grandfather of the protagonist) exposing his buttocks. To see a 17-year-old 'mooning' might be considered amusing: to see a 70-year-old doing the same is simply tasteless and repulsive. My copy of the DVD is going straight to my local charity shop.

A rather sweet film. Some nice observations. Some funny moments. A little slight but it grows on you. Surprised at how much I enjoyed it. A lazy sunday afternoon feel good film.
