Although I have been meditating for 20 years my practice is rather erratic (five minutes is often all that I get). But I've found the book very accessible nevertheless. It is easy to read and very approachable. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is on a path to know themselves at a deeper level. Don't be put off by the title - I was a little puzzled by that myself at first - if you are familiar with the Enneagram or similar self-knowledge traditions you will find it very easy to digest.
I find as I get older it becomes more important to me to make my life simpler and less cluttered. My meditation practice - imperfect although it is - is central for that and this book makes a very welcome contribution at this level. Where it is genuinely different is in its emphasis on understanding who we are through the lens of our character. This is an area which has brought me a profound sense of peace and connection over the years. Put the two things together in Kamalamani's book and you've got something really rather special.
Mediation isn't really meditation at all unless in includes all of you. And, we do not truly or deeply live life unless we experience it with the whole of ourselves. Learning to be and experience our wholness in meditation, our heights and our depths, and the totality of our physical, emotional and mental selves, and of coming to experience and know deeply that these parts of ourselves are not indistinguishable, is a 'coming home' to our body and our depths. It's like beginning to live in colour rather than shades of grey, and through this process we come to a much richer and fuller experience both of meditation and of life.
Kamalamani's book is an invitation to meditate and to live in wholeness and in colour, and a warm, wise, practical guide as to how we can help ourselves to do this. I can't recommend it highly enough.
This is my impression, so far:
This is a very Good Book! In the Bhuddist tradition of Loving Kindness, Kamalamani offers us a deep understanding of character, and encourages us to explore where we are, and where we are coming from. We are invited to settle down and to meditate on being human, and characterful. In so doing, we may develop greater acceptance of ourselves and others, both in our strength and vulnerability.
This book is in the same realm as Anoda Judith's "Eastern Body Western Mind: Psychology and the Chakra System as a Path to the Self", in my view. Both have the potential to heal the cultural split which can be so divisive, beginning where we can begin - with ourselves - to further intergration of Body and Soul.
