The music on this cd ranges from the usual suspects - de Machaut, the Italian saltarello and istampie - to more esoteric pieces from Spain and Eastern Europe by 'anonymous'.
The group itself lays on what I would consider the more danceable aspect of early music, which is to say, you wouldn't play this during a dinner party, but it's fantastic for the car or listening to while working.
Slow pieces, fast pieces, vocal and instrumental - if you're looking for a good introduction to early music, or simply want something different, this is the cd for you.

Medieval banquet

The combination of festive celebration with food and music is something that has been a part of human life throughout the ages. But here on this recording the St George's Canzona examine the sort of "banquet" of the medieval period in terms of the musical celebration that it offered.
The programme of tunes in this marvellous recording is drawn from various parts of Europe.
There is the French Dances Royales and the Italian Salterlli. Also there are the English carols and songs and music from Germany and the east.
The tunes used range in date from the 13th Century to the 16th Century.
The use of instruments such as rebec, vielle and organetta, percussion and psaltery, fiddle, chimes, recorders, crumhorn, dulcimer and rauschpfelfe give a fantastic flavour in this interpretation of medieval music.
The St George's Canzona give us a wonderful performance of these varied pieces.
All the arrangements are by John Sothcott and the whole programme is full of vigour and entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best! 24 Dec. 2000

This CD really is fit for banquets, if you don't have live musicians, it will put ambiance at your feast! Of course, the music is from the late part of the Middle Ages, as we don't really know what it sounded like in the Dark Age.
Most of the tunes are quite lively, just like the atmosphere of your event should be! I personnaly most enjoy Robin Hood and the Tanner, as I'm trying to learn it by heart. The accent of the singer is ouch!, but ...
All in all, one of the best Medieval music CD I've listened to, even if a couple of tunes are boring.
