Once more talented wordsmith, Victoria Simcox takes us to a land full of intrigue and emotions in such a captivating way that though this novel is darker than the first two books in The Bernovem Chronicles, it was hard to put this novel down until I'd gobbled up the last word!

To find each character and scene riveting was a feat many who write series fall short of, but this was certainly not the case to the delight of this author/reviewer - and believe me when I share that many series seem to slip by book three. All I can say is that within the pages of this tour-de-force work are so many twists and turns that if you're looking for a book you and your children can read together and discuss, this series is a MUST READ!

Having read the first two books in this series with my sons (now ages 9 & 11), I was glad to be able to continue on with the adventure with this 3rd installment. Thankfully, this 3rd book did not disappoint, keeping all three of us engaged and tethered from beginning to end. And that is saying a lot because I am NOT typically a "fantasy-book" kind of guy! In fact, while I initially picked up the series strictly for my kids (to read to them at bedtime), I actually couldn't wait to get back into the adventure when I received the alert that this new book was out and we bumped another book on our running list just to get to it sooner on the day we bought it. And, like the first two, once we started reading, I ended up liking the story as much as my kids did.

As for the writing, I think the author did a great job in bringing the fictional fantasy world to life. I not only cared about the characters and their missions but the description of their physical surroundings was excellent and the dialogue realistic. There were no long, drawn-out boring parts with excessive, droning dialogue. Everything had a point and, even if fairly involved, was still engaging throughout. I have read A LOT of fantasy book with my boys over the years and most of them cause me to zone out at some point in the story and rarely get me interested again . It's truly a treat when I can get so into a story with the kids that I WANT to let them stay up later than usual just to keep reading (or don't even notice that we are over our regular time-limit)! All three books in this series have succeeded in that regard. And I bet #4 will do the same when it arrives.

Definitely recommended.

I have read all of the books in author Victoria Simcox’s Bernovem Chronicles, and I think this one is the best one yet. In The Medallion we meet up again with Kristina Kingsly, and the stakes for her and for Bernovem couldn’t be higher. Kristina is searching for Azaril Crimson—who has hidden the powerful Book of Prophecy, and Hector Mysteria, a surprise visitor from Kristina’s past, and a dragon are all on hand to assist her on her dangerous journey. At the same time, Kristina’s beloved Werrien has been captured and is going through trials of his own. And all the while, the evil queen Sentiz plots to obtain the Medallion—the last item she needs to complete her takeover of all of Bernovem.

Once again, Victoria Simcox introduces us to a world of colorful and magical characters. Kristina is as feisty as ever, and after the events of the first two books, she seems to have grown even stronger—she is steadily growing into her role as Bernovem’s true chosen one. There is also a mysterious angelic figure who pops up from time to time, the glorious dragon, Aggy, and of course, the dwarves, gnomes, fairies, and shamels that we got to know in previous books. And in this book we get to see more of the fearsome irgul. The irgul are growing their ranks and getting ready to go to battle for Sentiz. It feels like a truly epic clash is brewing.

Throughout it all, Victoria Simcox continues with her signature twists and reveals—quite a few situations and characters turn out to be very different than you expected them to be. The story reads very quickly, and I found myself finishing the entire book in a day and a half.

The Medallion is an exciting, magical book, and I highly recommend that you go along with Kristina on her latest adventure.

Good things don’t always happen when we want them to, and we have to wait. The waiting often is worth it, though. Take Author Victoria Simcox’s latest novel, THE MEDALLION (THE BERNOVEM CHRONICLES BOOK 3) in her series. After reading the first two books I looked forward to the next one. And it finally is here.

In THE MEDALLION (THE BERNOVEM CHRONICLES BOOK 3) we meet our favorite characters again, along with some not so favorite characters, the troublemakers, of course. As we travel along with Kristina and Hector through the world of Bernovem, in their search for the Wizard Azaril, we encounter all sorts of strange creatures: angels, a dragon, serpent, and bats. The author describes each character vividly, making them seem almost alive.

Then there’s Sentiz, the queen, on a quest of her own to find the Medallion and insure she’ll be the ruler of Bernovem. Several plots are going on in the story, and the author switches to different point-of-view characters to let the reader see their thoughts and reactions to the events taking place.

If you enjoy reading about magic, amazing and unusual creatures, some good, some evil, then pick up a copy of THE MEDALLION and travel along with Kristina and the other characters as they face almost impossible odds to reach their goals. Victoria Simcox has written another lovely story that will charm you and have you waiting for the next book in the series.
