As a child, I loved Meccano. I'm now in my forties, and was delighted to receive this model as a gift, and I looked forward to a pleasant hour or so of screwing it together.

That lasted about five minutes, until it became clear that, following the very first step of the instructions, getting the parts to fit together properly was going to be a challenge - the design is such that some parts have to be bent fairly forcefully to get them to fit, and that other parts will bend whether or not you want them to! This carried on for the next couple of hours - at one point I was forced to dismantle several previous stages to get a new component to fit, as it seemed physically impossible to do what the instructions suggested in the correct order. I'm a professional engineer and an experienced user of hand tools, but on several occasions I despaired of actually being able to get the nuts onto the relevant screws in tiny confined spaces while simultanously holding together 4 parts that were under tension and trying to spring apart...

The resulting model looks very impressive, and you are certainly left with a sense of achievement, but the process of building is rather more frustrating than I remember with the Meccano of my youth. The box says for ages 8 and up - I would strongly advise that giving this to an 8 year old will result in disappointment, followed by Dad having to build it for him, with the prospect of said 8-year-old learning a lot of interesting new words from Dad in the process...

I bought this as a birthday present for my 46 year old husband!
Although the box says it's for 8 years+ it still took him a while to put it together - James May has a lot to answer for!
Overall he really enjoyed putting it together as it was a real blast from the past.

I bought this for my son's 10th Birthday and he was thrilled. He spent a rainy afternoon constructing it, with a little input from his father, who was itching to get his hands on it. He is now very pleased with the end result and took it to bed with him. Excellent value. A little fiddly at stages - the windscreen insertion instructions should be studied carefully and there are a lot of instructions for a 10 year old to want to read through, but it was a challenge and there is nothing wrong with that.

The Red Arrows sell themselves. I have loved Meccano since I was very young and girls were not expected to be interested!! As a primary teacher, DT is one of my favourite subjects to teach, and my school is full of construction kits for every year group. Great for the development of fine motor skills and hand/eye co-ordination, it is also very beneficial for stimulating the imagination and/or learning to follow instructions. Children learn and understand basic component shapes so that they are able to visualise what is needed when planning, cutting out and constructing their own models.

Horrible rather than fun to build. Trying to get tiny parts to screw together with insufficient space for the allen key virtually impossible - ended up literally needing 4 hands. "Flexible parts" - the red strip across the canopy's paint cracked and came off on bending it into position - so now had an ugly black area across the plane's nose. Instructions complicated. Really unimpressed.
