Book Description

A gritty and emotionally engaging novel set in a single west London street.

From the Back Cover

It is early morning and Meanwhile Street thinks it's waking to a regular Wednesday in May. Soon a disconcerting sound alerts Maggie and Gordon that something's not right. Throughout the day neighbours bear witness to a series of apparently unrelated incidents that, by midnight, leave a solitary fifteen-year-old running for his life and a Polish girl preparing to flee London for good.

It is Thursday before anyone knows events have culminated in a single, heart-wrenching tragedy. In the aftermath, kids and adults from all backgrounds, are forced across their thresholds to confront one another and the community they share. Love and trust, courage and cowardice, hope and despair, are all challenged, with some extraordinary and surprising consequences.

Format: Paperback
Not only did I love this book, I think it a really important novel for our times. It was incredibly clever in that it showed (rather than just told us) how one life affects many others, something we can easily forget these days. I was completely engaged from start to finish and was impressed by the way the author managed to balance all the characters with real skill. It's a book that finds warmth in the most difficult of circumstances and reveals tensions in those which seem most harmonious. It made me think about my neighbours and my street. I suspect that at some level, we all live in Meanwhile Street. Highly recommended.

Meanwhile Street is one of those rare things - a book that makes you look afresh at the world around you. Set in an ordinary London street, it charts a series of extraordinary events that draw together its inhabitants into a sudden and unexpected intimacy. Unsympathetic characters are given a chance to make good, while others whom we might not ordinarily give a second glance turn out to have fascinating interior lives. Chilling by turns, heartwarming and ultimately redemptive, Meanwhile Street reminds us that city living does not - and should not - exist in a vacuum.

I loved this book. So often it is easy to ignore the horrors and corruption not only in our own society, but our own neighbourhood. Are they so far removed from those we hear on the news everyday? Meanwhile Street will make you wonder if they are. Maybe if we all took a little more time to get to know and care for those that live in our street the knock on effect would make not only our neighbourhood but our world a safer, happier and better place.
It certainly made me wonder.
