McTeague (Signet Classics) Mass Market Paperback – 6 Dec. 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
McTeague is the story of a poor dentist scraping by in San Francisco at the end of the 19th century, and his wife Trina, whose $5,000 lottery winning sets in motion a shocking chain of events. Fans of Jack London and Theodore Dreiser will appreciate the richly crafted prose and the historically accurate portrayal of 19th century America. Few works have captured the seamy side of American urban life with such graphic intensity.

The story proceeds slowly at times but I think that is appropriate for the situation and characters depicted. There are stylistic issues that may bother 21st century readers. The author tells you that a character is “stupid” or “adorable” or “brutish” rather than letting narrative action lead you to that conclusion. This is somewhat common in 19th century literature than today. I think that this is also because the apparent main characters may not be what the story is about. Rather I suspect the author was writing about the the nature and values of certain segments of late 19th and early 20th century. It also seems to me it pre-dates later moore themes in literature and film. “Broken Blossoms” come immediately to mind. The final scene must be some kind of original as I (and you too most likely) have seen versions of it played out in a dozen or more movies.
Norris writes some very nasty anti-semitic, sexist and racist descriptions. These are, however, not unique to him but common of the era he lived in. That doesn’t excuse it but for the reader to reject the book on that account is to reject an honest look into the past. At the same time I suspect I detect a strong hint “scientific racism” and maybe “eugenics” that would have been not untypical of a person of the time with his educational background ( Berkeley, Harvard, Paris).
Anyway, not an easy book but rather a significant one and sometimes an engaging one.
