Personally I go back to the book again and again, and it has opened up so much for me, and yet I am still only beginning to unravel the hidden treasures buried within. For anyone with an interest in Central American spirituality, The Crystal Skulls, Star-seeding, or for those who feel stagnant and wish to begin a new and beautiful quest, "Maya Shamans, Travellers in Time" is for you.

I have studied Maya religious rites, ceremonies and their basis is the shamanic tradition for over thirty years and have NEVER come across such drivel as is presented in this book. I can only surmise that this entire exercise is an attempt to promote her "Sun and Serpent Maya Mysteries School UK".
Persons interested in Maya shamanism should purchase " The Maya Cosmos" by Friedel, Schele and Parker for an archaeologically and conceptually correct view.
One of the reasons more and more people in the developed world countries are becoming aware of the indigenous Maya Indian people of Central America is because of a supposed `end' calendar date that relates to 21st December 2012.
Mercier's travels to the Maya lands and the research she has undertaken through meeting Shamen, Elders and Day keepers provides fascinating insights into a world that we have somehow become disconnected from in our unsustainable fast all consuming world of materialism. The rhythm of nature these indigenous people of central American rainforests represent reveals just how misplaced our stressful lives are.
The colour photographs and the appendices giving a glossary of terms and the various calendrical cycles add to the feeling of place the author is able to convey. She is a keen observer, not only of present day Mexico and Guatemala, but of the shamanic mysteries of the long ago past.
It is a difficult task to explain the complexities of Maya shamanism in terms everyone will understand, but she succeeds admirably. A fascinating glimpse into a subject we know very little about.
It appears the calendar keepers had a binary system centuries before the Western world and the Haab calendar, one of seventeen, has been calculated by NASA to have a 0.00000001 degree of accuracy to the atomic clock, requiring only a one day adjustment in every 180,000 years,
Duality, light and darkness, the shadow self, are all contained in the folklore of the Maya and Mercier reveals many insights in the carefully crafted thirteen chapters - hardly surprising to find there are thirteen since this is a foundation number for the sacred Tzolkin calendar
Maya words are used together with their English translations - useful when visiting the many ancient ruined cities. She explains the significance of Serpent Wisdom through appearances of snakelike carvings depicted with human heads emerging from the mouth of the creature. The book leads us to speculate on our origins in the cosmos particularly in relation to the Pleiades and Orion. All in all an excellent read for those who want to deepen their understandings of the Maya.
