...honestly! I've had this album since my university days. I have played it literally hundreds of times, possibly over a thousand. It's the best ambient album I've ever heard and, obviously, I can't recommend it enough.
Every track is great, and they feed in to each other well. The first half of the album is fairly upbeat. Then it gets chilled out. Good for getting to sleep to from track 6-9.
Oh, and it's better than the other Banco albums, although the other albums do have great material too.

A classic CD in my collection that I have never tired of since I bought it (at the time of release). Beautifully crafted. Lush layers melt into one another. It is another of those albums that played quietly can calm the most stressed nervers, but another time with a little extra volume will get you gigging.

Highly recommended.

A fine album with a very wide ranging yet very comfortable blending of styles. Varying from dancy to very ambient(yet not bland) for me this album has it all. An essential purchase for fans of the genre.

Bought Maya shortly after Last Train To Lhasa (double CD) in the late ninties and listened to them both on and off, then recently ripped them to my hard-drive, edited the following twelve selected tracks intros and outros down onto one CD. They are in order; Last Train To Lhasa, Kuos, China, Amber; Kincajou, White Paint, Kuos (gnomes mix), Heliopolis, Mafich Arabi, Sunspot, Qurna, and Sheesha. This is now one of my favorite CD's that I play more often as it always puts me in a good mood, which is why I listen to music in the first place. The rhythms and percussion are brilliant with a Tibetan/Eastern flavour. Some tracks are uptempo but accompanied with relaxing chanting. It doesn't get better than this. Just ordered two more of his CD's. So thank you Banco. Thank you Toby.

Maya is a quality debut from Banco de Gaia, it's well worth getting, as it is by far the best album. I had an original from when it first came out that I lost, and immediately replaced with the import. For those of you whoever went to a Megadog night in the early to mid 1990's, you will love this. It's funky techno mixed with worldly beats, and is exceptional. It's one of those CD's that you can dance too, or unwind to, depending on your mood. It doesn't alter moods, but enhances them straight away with track one - Helipolis, and from there it just keeps getting better!
