Yes, there are only 8 tracks on this recording and the whole thing lasts only 34 minutes; and yes, Maxwell's debut Urban Hang Suite was a high standard to surpass - but with the release of this recording Maxwell has really surpassed himself (and countless others).

Although rarely mentioned among the greatest MTV unplugged recordings, this is absolutley the best of the whole bunch of them bar none.
Where do I start? Fantastic instrumentation that moves you in the right places, and gets you grooving in others. The band, including horns and strings, is just perfect. Backing vocals credibly recreate the mood of the "Urban Hang Suite" album, and Maxwell himself is on top form.
The re-work of Kate Bush's "This woman's work" is simply a stroke of genius, with Maxwell holding a flawless falsetto throughout. As for the live interpretation of "wherever, whenever, whatever", if the strings don't get your hairs tingling, the vocal performance certainly will.
This album is excellent and everyone should have it! 34 minutes worth making time for.

Maxwell's talent goes beyond that which can be described through anything but essence. His heart and soul pour into every note he utters and it is obvious through each song that the man has a lot of brains behind his music. His style, range and sheer blessed talent is something I can honestly say has me hooked into his music.
Despite the fact I have become very aware he isn't all that well known in the music world (- believe me I have LOOKED for his work. Mind you, it could just be boring Eastbourne), this album is more than a "worth it" purchase. Each one of his live recordings are just pure and simply astonishing. Not just one song- but the entire collection; short as it is, it is timeless.
Among my personal favourites is the funky tune 'Gotta Get: Closer' and the sensual 'Lady Suite'. The heart-warming 'Whenever, Wherever, Whatever' is soul at its purest and his amazing version of 'A Woman's Worth' is most definately a moment you wont forget. Very distinct of his style and ability and above all it trully is soulful.
This IS real Soul. Incredible, Maxwell =) Just plain incredible...

Maxwell has taken soul to a whole new level, the indeed gut wrenching rendition of 'this womans work' is amazing (for want of a better word), 'whenever, wherever, whatever' is the love song to top all love songs and as for 'sumthin, sumthin? pure brilliance. Short as the album may be it is one of the greatest soul albums ever, buy it!!! like now!!!

Despite being an owner of Urban Hang Suite for several years, I continually passed this by. I finally bought it a couple of months ago and instantly loved it. Its not just Maxwell's voice- sublime as it is- its the performances as a whole. The arrangement on all of these songs is superb, obviously performed by a group who know the songs backwards and enjoy them. They effortlessly blend into each other- but not in a bad way. Just perfect continuity. As a fan of Kate Bush I was intrigued to hear Maxwell's version of 'This Women's Work' and found the song to be transformed into a beautiful heartfelt plea. But then next to that you get uptempo songs that just make you want to dance. Altogether too short but makes you want to write to Maxwell and beg him to perform in a town near you.

This CD is at times beyond words. 'This woman's work' has to be one of the best songs of the 90s. I first heard it in 'love and baskekball' and I hunted the song down. I was estatic to find the added bonus of the rest of the songs on this CD. They're all brilliant! 'This woman work' still makes me weep. 'Sumthin' sumthin' also stands out... damn, they're all good! The one bad thing about this CD- IT'S TOO DARN SHORT!!!

this CD, and im not exaggerating changed my life, well in the sense that I myself am also a singer/songwriter, and before that, i listened to music with no real depth, and my mum handed me this cd, and when i first heard it, it blew me away, he is by far the most amazing male vocalist along with mariah carey as female, to go on to inspire the industry, his range and tone is Unbelievable
, and every song he sings, every lyric, is filled with emotion and spirit, especially his version of "This Woman's Work" which i have also performed at shows etc. he is an amazing artist, and deserves much more exposure rater then being an underground act, he deserves success and more exposure, this is what the industry SHOULD be, not people that lyp sync and sell their image, but true talent, live insturments, a voice,
i highly recommend this, his NOW and Embrya album are also amazing, can't wait for his next recording!

I guess there's little value in adding yet another gushing review of this album - but I'm going to do it anyway. That's how good this album is!

If I could only take a few albums on a desert island, etc, etc,. Why so good? - (i) great soul music and (ii) solid gold musicianship. This CD will drip of your stereo like sweet soul syrup - perfect harmonies, muscular baselines, breezy percussion, and of course Maxwell's soft voice - this is perfectly crafted music for those soul fans out there. Add to that great longevity, and you've got a sublime album of music.
