It covers special interview situations, such as dealing with specific patient reactions, and other special problems, for example, conducting a complicated assessment in cases of self-harm. The book concludes with important legal issues and is supported by helpful appendices for ready-reference.
As with previous editions, this sixth edition has been revised and rewritten with the full and active involvement of a group of consultant psychiatrists and trainees, making it a highly relevant and practical handbook for all psychiatrists whether learning or refreshing their skills.

It is aimed at a readership among trainee psychiatrists, and is designed to keep in bag or pocket so as to be referred to at any time. There is an emphasis on sound unembellished advice across a range of practical situations, which a psychiatrist might encounter on a daily basis. It is reassuringly up to date.
There are chapters on interviewing patients and the mental state examination, and how this is conducted in a variety of clinical scenarios. There is a useful section on children, and on the neuropsychiatric examination. There are good sections on psychosocial and cross-cultural assessments, and an especially useful section on less common clinical presentations. There is a comprehensive section on current UK mental health law. The therapeutics section is complemented by a series of appendices ranging from assessment questionnaires and dosage regimes.
Overall, I feel that this edition of the Maudsley Handbook is an impressive achievement. As well as being indispensable to trainees, it will be very useful indeed for the more senior psychiatrist, who might very much value being kept up to date across a broad range of clinical situations.
