But overall Tawny is much loved and has been a huge hit with my six year old. I would say Tawny is more suited to a caring type of child: one who helps and assists rather than expects a real mini horse and is frustrated with the stiff-legged rocky action of this one.
So I would recommend it - with some reservations - and will be buying another one this Christmas for my younger daughter.
As for the horse itself, it is well made, and has managed to last six years, without any of the unattached parts going missing. The main trouble with the horse, I believe, is that it does not work too well on carpet, or even thin rugs. With a wooden surface, linoleum or tiles, the horse is able to do all that is said it can do, but on any other surface, it radically fails.
The only other problem I can find is that its mane and tail tangle incredibly easily, causing hours of trying to straighten it out with the (not very good) brush provided.

Got it home out of package, put the batteries in it, worked literally for all of 20-30 seconds before making a loud crazy clicking sound inside. NO force or drops or anything, in fact nobody was even touching it, it walked a bit stopped, fell over and started clicking loudly.
Called the number on the box for service at Mattel, spoke to a guy who said "oh yes item J9488, hum your the 3rd call today I have had on this item" (and it was only noon when I called) so I guess others are having trouble too.
They don't have the horse in stock to send a replacement, so their solution was to send a check for $28 that is of course AFTER we mail the broken item back to them at Mattel.
Spent a good 30 mins driving around today, walmart target and toys r us are out of stock, so now I have a 6 yr old who wants this horse, mattel has none to offer (wonder why) and I can't find one to even swap it out with.
Not sure if we got a bum horse OR like the phone rep and other reviews here state, we might just have a bum product.
Try explaining that to a 6 yr old though.
