Top Customer Reviews

By Sid Nuncius #1 HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 27 Jun. 2014
Format: Audio CD
I think this is a cracking disc of Baroque violin music. Matteis was an Italian violinist and composer who flourished in London from around 1675 to 1700. He was chiefly known as a virtuoso on the instrument, but these pieces show that he was a very decent composer, too. They have wit, charm and genuine inventiveness as well as all the virtuosic fireworks you would expect, and they make a very enjoyable programme.

Amandine Beyer and Gli Incogniti play it superbly. They have the skill to make light of the technical challenges and play with a perfect blend of gravitas and real zing which makes the music really sing out. Beyer in particular is brilliant here, with a vigour, a lovely judgement and clarity of phrasing and an obvious enjoyment of what she is playing. It's a performance at least to match that of Rachel Podger with The Palladian Ensemble in her performances of Matteis - and that's really saying something.

The recorded sound is excellent and I think this is an all-round gem of a disc. Very warmly recommended.

I heard them for the first time on R3 lunchtime concert from Wigmore Hall. I'm not a classical scholar so won't try to give a detailed analysis. I was just transfixed by the sound and what was described as superb filigree finger work on the violin. It's a thoroughly enjoyable album and I will adding more from this ensemble to my collection.

This is a wonderful selection of the little known Matteis. Beautiful and varied with highly skilled performances, it is at once haunting and uplifting.

For lovers of Bach or Purcell this forty track recording is a must. Even if you've never heard of him this is well worth the risk.

Lovely example of early music, I'm not a classical music fan, but this hits the spot, played it a lot until I lost the cd!!

HASH(0x9b492b88) out of 5 stars Finding a Gem 29 April 2010

Amandine Beyer is slowly moving from obscurity to public attention. This collection is a gem. It dazzles and amazes the listener as it recounts the moods of perhaps one of the last troubadours. Full of beauty, pain and good old fun, Beyer has brought Matteis from the archives to the world. She is a brilliant and meticulous musician and I hope we hear more from her and her ensemble. Bravo!

Beautiful Baroque string pieces played with spirit and passion. Lovely CD. I first heard it on Australia's ABC Classic FM radio.
