This book was written second in the series but takes place before the first, I strongly recommend reading it AFTER To Murder Matt, as I did.

You read about how Matt's life started out and if there are any triggers into how he became as evil as he is in the first book. Matt didn't have a straight forward start in life and it doesn't get much better for him, I felt a lot of the time that he was let down by all the adults around he which gave him the resentment in himself to make others suffer and in turn make himself feel in control.

You see early on how he has been let down and its almost as though he could have been a good man if things had been different for him. At every turn he was let down, I almost felt sorry for him but still couldn't excuse his behaviour to everyone in to Murder Matt.

You can see where he totally loses himself and starts his life of revenge and control, he quickly manipulates certain people and situations he finds himself in to benefit himself.

Almost at the end of the book you really think he is going to be ok, but he finds himself alone and in pain like he has never felt and that's when the 'real' Matt emerges and the terror begins for all who know him.

Matt the Beginning is the prequel to To Murder Matt by Viveca Benoir. This book takes you through Matt's troubled start from birth and asks the question does life make you who you are or are those dark urges always inside you from birth?

Matt faces unimaginable challenges throughout his early life and is often let down by those in the position to protect and care for him, this book did make me empathise with Matt at some points, I have read To Murder Matt and so know what he goes onto become and be so this book helped me get inside his mind to see how he became the man in the next book and how he met some of the characters who are also in the next book, but he evolves through this book from making bad choices to delighting in the torment and power he can cause for his own gain... A true Devil in disguise that walks the earth.

Yes Matt has a heart in this book, it's not fully cold and black yet, he has moments where he cares, feels and thinks of others but then someone lets him down or events don't work out as planned: this highly intelligent and ambitious young man won't be let down and revels in his revenge, retaliation and retribution upon those who wrong him: via sex, manipulation or plain old black mail (some methods will leave you feeling uncomfortable so be aware) ...He has so many points where you hope that maybe this is the one person who can help, show or save Matt from his chosen path but no, the stage is now set for Matt and this ending leads seamlessly into To Murder Matt.

A twisted tale of epic proportions that makes you question nature versus nurture.

I read this after "to murder Matt" and once again I was not disappointed, this book is dark and twisted but does explain why he became how he was, I almost started to thaw to Matt and feel a little sympathy towards him but then turned the page and soon got over it

This book takes you back to the begining of how Matt became so troubled!
It started from birth so the question you need to ask is are we all born the same and is it the way we are brought up maybe evil in just in some of us from the start..
I was so upset for the little boy at the beginning, But it doesn't last long and by the end I wanted him bed ..
Matt is the devil walking amongst us!
would not recommened if you have never read a dark book before, you need to have some experience with what you are about to read !!!

This is the first book of Viveca's that I have read and I really liked it.

I love dark and twisted stories and this is certainly one of those, it even made me cringe a few times.

In some parts I almost felt sorry for Matt, ALMOST!

I like reading books out of the norm with lots of OMG moments and this story was full of them.

This is a fantastic story that was written perfectly and I will definitely be reading more of Viveca's books.

If you like books with taboo storylines you will love this!
