About the Author
Goran Powell is a freelance writer and martial arts author who holds a 5th Dan in Goju Ryu Karate. He works in London and teaches and trains at Daigaku Karate Kai, one of the UK’s strongest clubs. In 2006 he published his first book Waking Dragons, an autobiographical account of his training for the 30 Man Kumite, one of the ultimate tests for a martial artist. An instant bestseller on Amazon's Martial Arts listing, Waking Dragons has become required reading in karate dojos worldwide. Goran’s first novel A Sudden Dawn was published in 2010, telling the story of the legendary Bodhidharma who brought Zen and martial arts to the Shaolin Temple, and winning three awards for Best Historical Fiction from USA Book News, eLit, and LivingNow. His second novel Chojun tells the story of a young Okinawan boy who trains with the world-famous karate master Chojun Miyagi as war looms in the Pacific. In 2013, Chojun collected five awards including Winner at Eric Hoffer, and Silver at the Benjamin Franklin Awards.

Matryoshka weaves a story of espionage, deception and violence that stems from the dark days of the Cold War through to the new Millennium, culminating in a fierce hunt and battle for survival that makes the book almost impossible to put down. The novel is written in Goran Powell's typically descriptive and well-researched style, making the reader feel like a spectator standing on the sidelines. But what sets this novel apart from other modern day thrillers is the author's's intimate understanding of combat, making the scenes of violence so vivd it is like watching a Hollywood action movie.
I loved this book.
My favourite line is:- "It was a light so ethereal that he'd always felt it might flicker & die at any moment, plunging the city into an infinite twilight"
All I can say is I wish I'd written that... Thank you Goran. Hurry up with number two. There will be a number two, won't there???
It's exciting and had me on the edge of my seat as I got totally engrossed and entranced by the characters and their exploits.
An excellent and educational read. I'm waiting for the next novel.
Thank you Goran Powell x
