The book has clear, concise explanations with many "interactive" examples, that is, examples are divided vertically down the page - on the left side you can try work out the problem (keeping the right side covered), after your attempt you can verify on the right side, it's very helpful. My only gripe with this book is that sometimes the problems at the end of the blocks were more complex than any of the examples provided within the block and I wasn't always able to figure out how I should proceed, but a quick question on sites like [...] and I was able to get back on track, but these questions were by far the exception.
I found it quite helpful that problems covered in early chapters resurface in exercises in later chapters reaffirming your newly learned skills. There are plenty of exercises throughout each chapter. Each chapter is divided into blocks covering different topics, each block will have a number of exercises after a new concept is covered (typically 5 to 10 questions) then there are end of block exercises covering everything from that block. At the end of each chapter there are end of chapter exercises (typically around 30 problems) covering the entire chapter; all of which help reaffirm the techniques within.
I can say without a doubt (and as someone who has struggled with maths in the past) this is the most intuitive and easy to understand maths book I have ever used. It was an enjoyable read and I'm sure I'll be referring to it for the foreseeable future.
I highly recommend it.
1.Contains a whole first year of engineering mathematics, from the basics all the way up to laplace transforms, there is also a topic on sequences and the taylor and mclaurin series.
2.It is a 3 colour book- blue black and white, and so is much easier to look at for longer periods of time then the slightly drab books by KA stroud.
3.There are plenty of exercises on each topic , which provide clear and logical steps on how the answer was reached, unlike many books that either skim through crucial steps or expect the reader to already be familiar with mathematical text.
4.There is also space to write answers in the book, and so can save working out on paper, and the answers are always posted beside the questions or below the questions. Many maths textbooks do not feature this and instead separate answers onto another book, typically called an answer booklet.
1.The exercise questions do come with solutions but not with working out, and this can be a slight bother when approaching novel problems or when the given answer is not reachable. But mostly using the examples given and the online suite, this rarely occurs but when it does, help can be found via online forums such as the student room or your university lecturers.
1.I have to say, for the £40 spent on this book, the online software is worth it alone, each chapter of the book contains a section online which contains 10-20 questions, each getting harder or adding more problems ( such as going from integrating xsin7x to integrating 5xe^2x. If at any point you get stuck , you can ask it to walk you through an example, and it goes into much more detail then the book.
The amount of work that has gone into this is incredible, and is a massively helpful resource that , dare i say it, would teach me mathematics better then your average lecturer could.
Overall: This book is a 9/10 , as its great value and jam packed with maths questions. I couldnt give it a 10 out of 10 as the book was a little thin on exercises, but the online software more then makes up for this
As always, half the battle is won when you purchase this book, the other half comes from actually doing the exercises and learning the method behind the maths!
However, "Mathematics for Engineers" is THE book that has made it so much easier to grasp all the mathematical concepts, as well as provide me with more worked examples to bed these in.
It is clear, concise, practical, eminently handy and above all usefully straightforward.
