Product description

About the Author

Throughout her working life Soozi has tried many different jobs, always seeking the elusive ‘dream career’. The quest has taken her from her first full time job as an office clerk in Plymouth, to University in Wales, a brief teaching stint in Japan, and far too many years in London working in a secondary school, international development charity, and several law firms and financial institutions. After a few years self employed back in the sunny South West, she’s now giving postgraduate study a whirl. As has been said on many occasions by friends and colleagues, “If you’re thinking of trying something different careerwise, speak to Soozi first – she’s probably already done it”. Soozi lives in South East Cornwall with her twin sons, where she writes and studis in ‘Mummy’s office’ - the only room in the house not full of toys (although definitely full of paper and books).

10 STARS! Amazing book, so glad I found it!
It is really useful, it gives plenty of ideas to expecting mothers and it re-assures new mums that they have not closed the career door by becoming a mother, but they have indeed opened up many new opportunities. Definitely a great read! Highly recommended +++++

Recently started listening to this on Audible. So far I am loving it. Good point, why do Mums become 'working mums' whilst dads don't get the title 'working dads'? Can't wait to carry on listening!

***I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review***

Maternity Leavers offers up suggestions for all prospects when you have a baby or small children to consider. It covers advice about the practicalities of returning to your previous job, or starting a new one, with guidance about flexible work and shared parental leave. It talks about how to set yourself up as self-employed, and the various business models that you could try. And finally, it suggests other ways to occupy your time that are not necessarily geared towards earning money. Soozi is very keen to reassure us that the parental journey is unique for everyone. She reminds us that our self-worth is not measured in cold, hard cash. We can choose to stay at home and nurture our children, or we can take on additional academic or practical studies. Or we could do voluntary work, if it fulfills us and makes us happy.

I enjoyed reading the book. The language is casual and friendly, and the chapters are short so you can read it around your baby/toddler/puppy etc. It made me feel better about the choices I make, and reminded me that there is always a solution to a challenge. It is never too late to try something new and reinvent ourselves.
