This is a 52 CD set put out by Membran. However, all 52 CDs are contained in the much larger (100 CD) Box Set "Meisterwerke the Masters of Music" (aka: "Meister Konzerte") also put out by Membran, and also available on Amazon UK.
At 100 CDs "Meisterwerke" is priced at 49 Pounds Sterling. So why purchase this 52 CD set for 53 Pounds Sterling when you can get all this music plus another 48 CDs for 4 Pounds LESS?
Both sets are given over to classic mono recordings around mid-20th Century, and at the price of 1/2 Pound Sterling per CD, the "Meisterwerke" set has to be one of the best bargains currently being offered.
I have given this 52 CD set a 1 star rating, only to entirely draw attention to the fact that it is ridiculous to buy this set when "Meisterwerke" is still available. Also, "Meisterwerke" comes with a booklet. "Masterpieces" does not.
For a listing of "Meisterwerke's" contents go on to Membran's web-site and hit "Box Sets". (My initial review showed Membran's web-site address but Amazon automatically deleted it before my review was posted).
"Masterpieces" does fit on one's bookshelf easily whereas "Meisterwerke" is a big bulky box. But that said, I just haven't figured out what Membran was thinking in issuing this abbreviated edition at a slightly higher price than the set twice it's size. So, unless I'm missing something, go with "Meisterwerke" and steer clear of this set.
