I bought this book for inspiration, expecting a range of illustrations showing how good the artist was and what could be done with coloured pencils. It turned out to be the best book I've seen on the subject.
It starts with the basics and works up to a very comprehensive technique using a range of projects. Without relying heavily on drawing skill this builds up technique through a range of projects that are taken step by step. As it uses photographs for source material everything you need is in the book. It's not a book for beginners in drawing but it won't leave them behind either. It will take both beginners and experienced colourists (from other media) to an advanced level. I would never have chosen coloured pencils for drawing glass nor considered them for intense colour. It's their subtelty in portraiture and botannicals that I'd used them for. Not now.
This book has changed the way I think about CP's now. My paintings/drawings have a depth and intensity of colour that almost takes my breath away. Details stand out from the other side of the room instead of looking washed out when you stand back. Portraits are more vivid, birthday cards have an almost photographic realness. You have to look twice to realise they're drawn images.

The book did inspire me, but not in the way I expected.
This is a book of instruction and delight. It handles fundamentals in small manageable projects without trivialising them. Each project, while excerpted from a larger work, is a satisfying and finished piece of art in itself.
I'm thrilled with this book and what it's done for my drawing.
I've been using it for a year now.

This is one of the best tutorial books ever not only does Arlene give you great step by step instructions she also tells you why you do it this way. For novices there is a great section on color theory and also perspective. To complete all the projects you are even given the outlined drawings to trace instead of doing it all freehand. A great book for novices and intermediate users although I am sure some pro's would pick up some good tips too.

Arlene is a great artist, this is beyond doubt to anyone who has seen her work. Those of us who know her from "Scribbletalk", where she gives tirelessly of her wealth of knowledge and experience, know she is also a great teacher. Put those two qualities together and you are bound to have a great book. What I really like about this book is not just the information on how to work with coloured pencil, but the focus on being an artist. Arlene concentrates on composition, on seeing, on developing a vision in your head - and then gives you the tools you need to make that vision come to life. I have worked in coloured pencil for many years now, and still learnt a lot from this book, and I am sure it will soon be seen as a classic.

This is a very good book for learning to use coloured pencils and improving your technique. I have seen others use the same layering and burnishing techniques, so their is nothing unique in that, but the paintings are vibrant and beautiful. The 15 demonstrations are worth following, there is a lot of useful information here. Good variety of subjects painted too.

Very informative and helpful book, however for those of us using different pencils it would have been helpful to have had a small colour sample alongside the names of shades. I have found that a lot of coloured pencil books are the same.

Wonderful examples though of what can be done using pencils. I'm inspired!
