I gave it my best shot, but I was more intrigued by Belle Coeur and Tristan than by our Hero "Smoke/ David/ CAT" and the Heroine - human turned werewolf- Eva Roman.
This book feels like a "filler". That is, it was only written to continue the intrigue of the Evil Werewolf & his attempts to destroy the Mageverse vampires & witches.
Read it to find out what is happening to the characters of the Mageverse: Guinevere, Arthur and Morgana all have parts to play. But don't really expect to work through the complex situation with Smoke, his super powers and his history. I really did lose the plot: not a good sign.
The books gets one star because there were a couple of things that made me laugh out loud. Finding out that Arthur's' favourite film is Monty Python and the Holy grail gave a few pages of giggles. But it was not enough to save a poor story. For me the basic problem is the hero and heroine were too complex / contrived to care about.
At the beginning of the book Beth knew nothing about her powers and was somewhat confused. She felt a responsibility to use her powers for good if the situation called for it, but was neither belligerent nor reckless. She was neither paranoid nor stupidly gullible when getting to know the hero, and had realistic, three-dimensional relationships with the people around her. She is neither a victim nor a princess, just someone who reacts in a believable way to the strangeness around her.
I loved Smoke and found his developing feelings for Beth very touching. I don't understand why anyone who can accept the basic premise of the Mageverse series would have any difficulty in suspending disbelief in this story! This is my favourite book in the series so far.
