Clocking in at over three hours in its entirety, The Master is one to take a disc at a time.

Disc one (ragas) is truly magical, proof that Shankar is an incredible player.

Disc two, Homage to Mahatma Ghandi is intense and reverential, track one building up over 24 minutes into something truly special.

Disc 3 is a series of collaborations with Japanese musicians. Some work better than others, but the standout for me is Tribute To Japan, which is (like a few others in this set) a thing of wonder. Also Padhasapa which has a kind of a Moondog quality. Brilliant.

So much for musicians being past it at 27. Shankar was in his 60s and 70s when some of these tracks were made.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Deutsche Grammophon for this intelligently compiled and reasonably priced set.

Discs 1 and 2 are excellent - even though disc2 is only 48 minutes long where disc1 is 74 minutes.

A word of warning about disc3 (69 minutes): this is a copy of the disc "Towards The Rising Sun". That is an excellent disc by itself.

If you already have Towards The Rising Sun then "Ravi Shankar The Master" only adds two discs of new material.

Absolutely superb, doesn't fail to impress throughout...
Even though some of the music can sound very similar, if you want to enjoy a cultural night in or just sit in mystical awe of the sounds produced here this collection exemplifies the fact that Ravi Shankar is definately a 'Master' of his music.
CDs 1 & 2 are most typical of his better known indian style music, while CD 3 has a far eastern / oriental influence to it being a dedication to Japan (which I believe was previously released under name 'Towards the Rising Sun').
Great collection to own !!!!

My all time favorite is morning and evening ragas but this comes a close second. My daughter bought me a wonderful birthday present several years ago, tickets to see Ravi Shankar at the Liverpool Philharmonic, it was full to bursting and such a memorable night. These CDs bring back sweet memories.
