This book is a collection of amazing pictures with the associated information of how the print was made. One of the problems with the darkroom for a beginner is that there are a huge number of choices to make. Other books may explain in better detail how to carry out the technique concerned, but few will illustrate the results of those choices, this helps to justify why a certain choice was made. It does not do this with words, but mainly with photographic examples. The more I look at it the more I get from it.
This book is a rather strange mix of basic darkroom guidance for novices and advanced printing techniques, with not very much in between. As someone who has some basic darkroom experience, looking to improve my abilities, the book was of rather limited value. I would recommend that you purchase this book if you want to see how a professional printer perfects images for advertising and editorial uses, but look for something else if, like me, your need is for something more practical.
This is a magnificent book! If you love photography, if you love black & white photography, if you love analogue photography, if you want to set home your own laboratory the traditional way... if you want the know the secrets of the most expert on the field... this is the book for you! Also, it's a feast for the eyes, a pleasure just to browse the amazing pictures, with all the deep insight on the printing information...!
If you are keen on progressing with black and white printing this is one of the best I have seen to help you develop your skills. Written by a printer at the top of his game, this is the definitive introduction.
