About the Author
Grace Draven has been reading romance and fantasy since she was twelve. In 2005, she decided to combine them by writing a story or two of her own. She considers it one of the best life decisions she ever made.

Martise is bland and drab in appearance "no beauty by the kindest standards", but has the voice of a seductress. She also possesses an unidentifiable magic and a spine of steel that, maybe unwisely, stops her from being totally cowed - "You have done an unwise thing, Martise of Asher," he said softly. "You've caught my interrest."
The other character of note is Gurn, a mute giant servant who runs the crumbling castle and calmly deals with the aftermath of attacks and magical assaults, be they from the nasty god or the crow wizard himself. He's kind and decent and trustworthy, and humane - everything Silhara apparently isn't.
And so the scene is set - for a battle of wills, his to find out who she really is, and what her magic is, hers to do the job she's been sent to do and get her freedom, and for the quest to destroy a god.
The scene setting and descriptive writing is good, as is the development of the inevitable relationship between Silhara and Martise. I read this easily and with interest, for some reason enjoying it far more than I expected - not sure what I was expecting! There's humour, a seriously nasty baddie, warmth and friendship, some magical battles and revelations, and the ending is just what you want, even if you do find yourself wondering how they'll be getting along in a few years time! My inner realist strikes again...
