From the standpoint of a former flying instructor, I have to say that Alan (Bunny) Bramson's instructional books for which he has sole authorship or in partnership with Nigel Birch are first class. However, as a writer of narrative prose he is not in the same league. Nevertheless, this is an interesting account of the life of a fascinating man who accomplished much in very diverse fields.

The book is a good record of Bennett's many achievements but reveals little of the obviously complex character of Bennett the man; I suspect that Bennett himself might have been a reluctant biographical subject. However, the major shortcomings in this book lie not with the author but his publishers who have not served him well.

There are more than a few irritating instances of uncorrected grammatical horrors, spelling mistakes and a general lack of literary tidiness. At one point, reference is made to an attack on the Renault works at "Bioncore". This had me confused until I assumed that Bramson had dictated the text and Bioncore was an anglicised "Billancourt" but the editorial staff had failed to spot this.

As far as I am aware, this is the only available biography of AVM the late Donald Bennett so is a "must have" for those with a serious interest in the the man and the background to precision bombing.

I really enjoyed 'Master Airman' by Bunny Bramson. (I knew Bunny and flew with him many times years ago) I've had 'Pathfinder'for many years and have read it several times, but it was interesting to be able to follow Bennett's career after the war. Bunny gives a balanced view of Bennett, from a pilot's viewpoint, with frequent, obviously subjective, anecdotes, which Bennett wouldn't have included himself. I was delighted to find and read this alternative story of Bennett's life and career. An excellent read !
