Excellent product for the money
5 out of 5 stars
Excellent product for the money
Excellent product for the money, built in thermometer (as well as the included externally attachable Thermocouple K type sensor - for more accurate readings up to and above 40C), built in decibel meter, auto-ranging mode for ranging of voltage readouts, AC/DC mode, amps, ohms (resistance). A lot of features for not a very costly outlay. Also quite nice is the way in which the LED's flash when you select a mode, for example, when no test leads are connected to the Multimeter and you turn it to "V" for voltage measuring mode, it flashes a red LED around the "COM" and "V" sockets, to indicate the black lead plugs into the COM port (black lead always plugs into COM port) and red lead connects to "V" port. The multimeter also has a built-in safety (both audible and visual) warning system. If you leave the multimeter in Voltage measuring mode, and have the red lead connected to the 10A port and the black lead connected to the "COM" port (As if you were measuring Amps/current but forgot to switch it to Amp/Current mode and left it in voltage mode) there will be an audible beeping tone, and the red LED will flash around the CORRECT port which the red lead should be connected to. Likewise for if you leave the Meter in Amp measuring mode, but have the black lead connected to the "COM" port and the red lead connected to the "V" port, an audible alarm will sound and the red LED will flash indicating which is the correct port to use for the type of measurement you have set the multimeter for. (NB - Doing both of the above whilst connected to a live circuit of fairly high voltage is VERY dangerous and should not be attempted), this can cause a short circuit which may lead to blowing of the fuse of the multimeter, damage to the multimeter, arc burns, fires, and electrical shock. Included is a manual, two test leads, the sensor and the multimeter itself.

So I was going to try and purchase a rather expensive Fluke 87V... but instead opted to save my money.

As a foundation radio ham I needed a decent multimeter to perform some basic electronic diagnostics and help with my progression to the intermediate level. This I feel was a good fit for me. Relatively cheap compared to the Fluke and in no way is it going to be an amazing count multimeter for hyper accuracy or precision but it's ideal for the hobbyist or doing some basic home electrical troubleshooting.

Auto Ranging is a feature i've not had on a multimeter before and I can safely say I love it.
The backlight and display is clear and easy to read, with multiple useful values displayed at once (e.g. duty cycle + frequency of signal)
The light up probe ports are a novelty but actually rather useful.
The inclusion of a basic thermocouple to perform basic temperature measurements has actually proven useful when monitoring some stepper motors for overheating issues.

It can measure lux from emitted sources along with relative humidity and air temperature all of which I've actually found useful since buying the device (never thought I needed it before... but seeing as I had it I used it anyway! :)).

All in all a fantastic device. The casing is good, robust and rubberised with a neat "home" for the probes, which are sharp (great for testing through insulation) and CAT IV approved. Should prove to be a useful device for a long time to come.

The nearest comparable instrument which I possessed cost my employer about £65, in 1997; so this meter represents excellent value-for-money. I bought this instrument because of the range of measurement scales and, particularly, because it also incorporates visual and audible warnings to try and prevent the user from connecting the test-leads incorrectly, for any range of measurement.
This is the ideal 'multimeter' for blue-collar service engineers like myself.
If you are lab-based, white-collared, earn £35K+p.a.; and your employer pays for your instrument; and your employer doesn't care how frequently you 'blow-it-up' (by incorrectly-connecting the test-leads); and you hardly ever use it anyway (because you spend all morning dealing-with your E-mail correspondence); then, you can probably justify £250 for a top-of-the-range, fashionably-branded meter.
If you are buying your meter to actually use it, then this is the instrument for you.

    1. Came with terrible loose packaging. Multimeter just floating around in damaged packaging box. I am surprised it did not break in transit and is possibly a used product? Which does not say good things about this company's quality control?
    2. Measurements are reasonable but are out by around 3-5% on voltage/Amperage, capacitors, resistors - though have not checked the rest of its features?
    3. OK just, for the casual hobbyist on low voltage circuits, but definitely not for professional mains work!
    4. Would have some grave concerns with regards to measuring high voltages - CAT 2 or CAT3. Be very careful! Not sure it is internally fully protected..I have my doubts?
    5. Price OK (Cheap), but don't expect too much from this multimeter
    6. Conclusion: Spend more money and get a more reliable auto ranging multimeter with real high voltage protection

I own several multimeters and have used them professionally throughout my career. Without exception they have all been capable of measuring certain basic electrical parameters: current (alternating/AC & direct/DC), voltage (alternating/AC & direct/DC), resistance, continuity, transistor/diode checking and optionally capacitance and temperature using an external probe.

The MS8229 has a feature range that includes all the above features - AS STANDARD - plus relative humidity, frequency, duty cycle, sound level and luminance. And what is more, the accuracy and resolution across all the parameter ranges is highly impressive for a multimeter which cost less than GBP40.00 from Amazon. A few years ago an instrument of this quality would have cost hundreds of Pounds and it would not have included all these features.

A unique feature, at least I have never encountered it before, is the presence of LEDs associated with each of the 4 sockets into which the multimeter probes are inserted. After selecting the parameter using the large knob, the sockets will light up indicating which pair of sockets to use to make the measurement. Furthermore, if a probe is accidentally disconnected during a measurement and audible alarm sounds. No doubt a failsafe feature. As an experienced technician I have no real need for these 'frills' but they are a wonderful aid for the beginner who has never used a multimeter before. It is quoted as being useable with one hand, leaving the other hand free. I believe it.

The MS8229 is large and quite heavy and has a large LCD (with backlighting). It has a chunky feel which suggests it is both strong and durable and made from quality materials.

It is supplied with a couple of probe leads for electrical measurements and a K-type thermocouple for temperature measurement.

I believe it is not a new design and it may have been available since 2009. However, what I find remarkable is that an instrument of this feature-rich design, quality and low cost has not attracted the notice of technicians (amateurs & professionals) long before now. Highly recommended.

Received this little gem this morning, added 3 good quality batteries, and tried a few different tests. All worked as one would expect. Maybe it's not the top end Multimeter that start above the $300, but more than adequate for most handyman shops when you need a meter two or 3 times a year or a half dozen times like me. Did quite a bit of research and checking reviews, Utube, etc before choosing this Mastech Multimeter but it just seemed like it offered everything and then some, as it never fails sometime down the road that's the feature you'll just need once in a blue moon, but this time you got it... Dam good deal..

5.0 out of 5 stars Viel Mulitmeter für wenig Geld...
Reviewed in Germany on 4 June 2015

5.0 out of 5 stars Travaillez en toute sécurité
Reviewed in France on 21 October 2015

5.0 out of 5 stars Un buon tester per uso semi professionale
Reviewed in Italy on 8 April 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars Todo funciona genial, excepto la función de continuidad (beep)
Reviewed in Spain on 19 June 2017
