Product Description

Three families that are best friends head to their secret retreat when WW3 seems to be nearing. The adults arrive at the retreat and must endure the stress to come while the children are separated from the adults and have their own troubles along the way. This is a great story in the fact that many of these types of movies deal in violence while this one deals in the psychological aspect of the situation.

HASH(0x95e42348) out of 5 stars A decent training film...or something...... 9 Oct. 2001

Part of a spate of 'civilization-apocolypse' films such as 'Testament', 'The Day After' and 'Warlords of the 21st Century', Massive Retaliation tries hard to be a serious movie, but quickly descends into the ridiculous.
The plot has a group of suburbanite survivors picking up and fleeing for their stocked retreat in the California mountains... and for some inexplicable reason, allowing their children to head for the hills by themselves. The childrens' mechanical difficulties are predictable, to be polite, and the acting throughout is mostly forced, although Bobcat Goldwaith has a few decent lines as a pseudo-'Gilligan'.
As for the above title, I would highly recommend this movie to any budding survivalist as the penultimate 'How-NOT-To'; the 'heroes' of this film make just about every possible mistake they can, from letting the locals know about their stockpiles, to their policy of letting their children fend for themselves, their 'shoot-on-sight' policy (a NURSE, for crying out loud!), to the ridiculous landmines and the abject failure to create a stockpile of potable water.
If you're looking for entertainment, pass this by; if you want a visual sample of what NOT to do in a similar situation, you can't get much better than this.

whinny women. what little drama we get is overshadowed by poor bitchy acting...In the end it isnt about survival its an after school psa morality tale of putting family first...the only character with a head on his shoulders is shunned and made to look like a heartless villain, when he is the only hero. The son has a pretty cool adventure storyline, but this movie is a bunch sticks held together with tape... it just wont fly

When I was in my teenage years I had this film in my VHS collection, so I started a DVD collection more than a decade ago, and here in Brazil this particular movie has never been sold as a DVD. This film is an exemplar of the Sci-Fi, kinda trash, they used to make back in the eighties, which I was used to enjoying them very much. Now, I just saw this movie again, and I remembered those cold war days, when everybody were afraid of a nuclear attack, this film, as many others made back then, are related to the emblematic TV movie "The Day After", and "Mad Max" as well.

This movie has been justly called "what NOT to do in a disaster" 3 LA yuppie couples flee LA when Mideast tensions escalate to nuclear flashpoint between NATO/Warsaw Pact ( technical error by writer: Soviets have no aircraft carriers; their WWII batttles were against Germans; they have 1,000's of tanks instead) They head for their prepared survival retreat/vacation ranch approximately 4-5 hours from the city. They are worried about their kids (ages 6-17) who left 10-12 hours ahead of the parents for 4th of July vacation but who have yet not arrived when the adults do despite their long headstart. In the next 48 hours the 3 couples make mistakes too stupid for Gomer Pyle, Jethro Bodine& Gilligan to commit (I counted at least 48 mistakes any survivalist would have corrected), all despite over a year of preparation & an MD in the group to finance everything they need, including advanced computer systems, security alarms & monitors & even land mines! In the end they are at the "mercy" of a pair of dumb losers turned brigand/cop killer/child abductor/rapists. i do not want to sound negative about this movie as it is one of my favorites & you will learn more survival strategy from their mistakes than from any other movie& many survival manuals. If nothing else you will see how stupid california liberals can be! CHECK OUT MY OTHER REVIEW OF THIS MOVIE UNDER ITS DVD HEADING A GREAT FUN MOVIE
