Here,we witness the coming and going of THE FOUR HORSE MEN of the APOCALYPSE in GIANT SIZE # 3. Then we have conflicts involving the mad MAHKIZMO..THE NUCLEAR MAN!!, MADROX..THE MULTIPLE MAN is introduced in GIANT SIZE # 4, PROFESSOR XAVIER guest appears.
The best arc in this volume is FANTASTIC FOUR # 155 TO 157 in which THE SILVER SURFER attacks the FF due to the cunning of DOCTOR DOOM which is unbeknownst to all is long schemed by the dreaded MEPHISTO,lord of the lower realms. The SURFER was so close to his long-lost beloved SHALLA BAL and know it not!!!....I wish NORRIN RADD the best..For all the power cosmic gifted to him by the all mighty GALACTUS..THE SILVER SURFER is truly a lost, weary, lonely and troubled soul...
In issues # 158 & 159 XEMU attacks, MEDUSA returns to her rightful family THE INHUMANS and THE INVISIBLE GIRL returns to the FF. ARKON the ANNIHILATOR strikes in issues # 160 through #163, time travel, dinosaur fights and the THING and the THING team up. Also a battle with GAARD..alter ego JOHNNY STORM!!. Which all ended pleasantly...Bonus pin-ups,covers, introduction and essays on the creators are included in this rather large set with over 300 pages and FIFTEEN COMICS to show.
Recommended to die hard fans.
NOW here is a personal story in reference to this set.....It was the year 1979 in high school. I saw this fellow student for the first time and he had a comic. I went over and asked to see it and he gladly hand it over..to my utter amazement it was THE FANTASTIC FOUR # 155!! in which THE SILVER SURFER attacks the FF!!. He lent me, told me he has a collection, introduced me to his MOM and his BROTHER. we became the best of friends. Many years passed, we went through school, got employed in different fields...and then.. he just gotten very sick and shortly died after. DONALD BROWN was a brother who was much more than a friend and a friend who was much more than a brother..DONALD BROWN was a truly gentle soul. Easily perhaps one of the nicest persons ever to walk the earth. If it wasn't for THE FANTASTIC FOUR # 155, our paths would never cross..and this awesome brotherhood would have never ensued. That's why this set is perhaps the MOST IMPORTANT to me. Many thanks to MARVEL, many thanks to AMAZON, I dedicate this volume in loving memory of Mr DONALD BROWN....I know he is indeed resting in peace..perfect peace...
The first two story arcs in this volume are rather pedestrian. Both the "Four Horseman" story in Giant Size #3 and Thundra's origin in 151-153 start out interestingly enough but in both cases the resolution seems lame and contrived. The worst of the lot is 154 which is basically a frame for a reprint of an old Strange Tales Human Torch story (not included, mercifully). Fortunately, it only takes up a few pages.
Then things begin to pick up. Giant Size #4 introduces Madrox the Multiple Menace with a guest appearance by Professor X of the X-Men. The X-Men were in publishing limbo at this time and were making guest appearances to maintain their presence in the Marvel world. Then there is a great three part Dr. Doom and Silver Surfer story in 155-157 with a great twist at the end. Next up is a two part story with the Inhumans that puts Sue back on the team and Medusa back with the Inhumans. Finally, a rather over plotted but entertaining four issue clash with Arkon.
Extras are generous and comprehensive. We get covers for the all reprint Giant Size 5 and 6, an unused cover for Giant Size 5, and all the original material published in the Fantastic Four Marvel Treasury Edition.
Not the best Fantastic Four masterwork but the production standards are as good as ever. Recommended.
