I can play for many hours at a time with these lighter strings and feel that due to the quality of them I can play and bend the strings as aggressively as I want.
When they do start to go 'off' you will notice the tone and pitch begin to slip - then it's time to change to your next set so you can begin all over again. At £3.30 per set (multibuy) this is a no brainer for me.
The sound is rich, full, timberal & sweet. I'm recording with a producer who uses 3 mics for acoustic and he says its the best sound ever! I actually only use the A, D, G & B as I use them on my Ashbury Tenor guitar as they are the right gauge for me and ditch the 2 E strings - it's cheaper this way despite the waste. (I do keep them, so if anyone wants them..?).
Bottom line - you can't go wrong!
Whether you like 80/20's or not is purely personal preference. People who like them use descriptive words like 'clear', 'bright' and 'cuts through the mix'. People who don't like them use words like 'harsh', 'shrill' and 'ear fatigue'.
As I fall into the second camp I returned these strings. It's a bit annoying this fact wasn't made clearer as they are an 'add-on item' so if I had known I would have hunted down the phosphor bronze versions, but now it is too late and I will have to wait until my next purchase of £20 or more unless I want to pay postage.
In general Martin make decent strings and if you get the type you want and they are cheap then they are a safe buy, if you are looking for some simple uncoated strings.
Music has always been a huge part of my life as I started out with piano lessons as a kid, and a few years later I managed to get special permission to play on the pipe organ in the church of a village near Leamington Spa called Radford Semele (which is where my piano teacher lived at the time), but I gave up those lessons in 2000 because I was worried about falling behind with my school work as I was due to start my GCSEs a few months afterwards. And then, when I had enough time to myself, I took up guitar lessons in 2005 the age of 19 and have been doing so since and have every intention to continue them.
Back to the strings, I very highly recommend this set as the strings sound very nicely when playing the acoustic guitar.
The only downside is that you loose the crisp sound in a couple of months if you play every day. but at this price I prefer to buy them more often trusting that they won't snap, than buying expensive long-lasting ones that snap after a few weeks.
Ultimately, I know is a matter of taste... you gotta try different ones and pick the one you like since they all have slightly different feel and sound.
