Agatha Christie's classic sleuth, Miss Marple (Geraldine McEwan), takes on another case of murder most foul. After a serious motorcycle accident, the dashing Jerry Burton (James D'Arcy) arrives in the sleepy village of Lymstock with his sister Joanna (Emilia Fox) to recuperate. Their expectations of peace and quiet are quickly dashed when they discover a poison pen-writer is at large in the village. Together Miss Marple and Jerry set out to stop the malicious messages before they result in another tragedy. Little do they know that they will ultimately unveil a murderer.

The 21st century ITV series starring originally Geraldine McEwan and then Julia McKenzie, did much to upset the purists; not only did they mess around with the plots, they introduced a camply sexual element and seemed, to some at any rate, to be guying the genre. I, however, loved them, not least because of the extraordinary array of guest artists who adorned each episode.
This particular episode (from 2005) features a roster of ripely overblown performances by the likes of Harry Enfield, Jessica Stevenson, Keith Allen, Frances De La Tour and Thelma Barlow, all of whom can be relied upon to light up the screen with their every appearance, but even they are upstaged by a wonderfully camp turn by John Sessions as the church organist. Even that master of the overblown, Ken Russell, gets a look-in, while Kelly Brook is fabulously pneumatic.
Miss Marple plays a relatively minor role in this and the heroes are in fact the brother and sister pairing Jerry and Joanna Burton, splendidly played by James D'Arcy and Emilia Fox. Geraldine McEwan, one of the most fascinating actresses of the past half century, is a perfect Marple; not too genteel, but as sharp as the proverbial razor...nearly as good as Joan Hickson, in fact!
This is a version not to be taken too seriously (the startlingly bad...surely deliberately so...back projections add to the pleasure), but you would be a hard man (or woman) not to find some fun in this. I picked this up cheaply; you should be able to do so too.
Maybe the budget was a tad restricted.
ITV have totally massacred Miss Marple again.
If you want to see a much better, ne, near perfect version, purchase BBC Miss Marple with Joan Hickson, avoid this cheap badly made version.
