Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie are fine actresses who do not disappoint in this enjoyable series. It is a strange thing that Agatha Christie's books translate wonderfully well to the small screen when actually they aren't that well written (sacrilege, I know). I can see why the writers and producers wanted to do something different from the superb BBC series starring Joan Hickson, but I really do think it was stupid to try to make the stories more sensational. Agatha Christie would never have dealt directly with some of the themes introduced she was far too cultured and sophisticated and far too much a woman of her time to write directly about lesbianism, etc. As far as these themes are present in her books, they are gently suggested, and no more. I can't give five stars to a series which does this and invents a past for Miss Marple, just to sensationalise and get an audience. Much of the charm of the stories is their reticence and delicacy.
Geraldine McEwan is, of course, too glamorous and outgoing (even in costume) to be a classic Miss Marple, though I did love her performance, Julia McKenzie portrays something closer to the original, a little more old-fashioned and unglamorous. Both women give intelligent and quite subtle performances. There are other very good performances, particularly by Laurence Fox and Dawn French. The scripts are good and the period atmosphere very well done. I still watch Joan Hickson and regard her as THE Miss Marple, but her age meant that she withdrew from the series before all the stories could be dramatised. it is good to see some of the other stories in these newer episodes.

The quality of the acting is excellent and the dvds were all legible except the one but last with episodes 1 and 2 of the last series, which I cannot view, as the dvd recorder says disc error.
Otherwise I enjoyed all the episodes (except one which was a bit messy and incomprehensible), especially the ones in which Geraldine McEwan was the actress.

I love Agatha Christie stories and these series by ITV are excellent. I've enjoyed watching them all again (at my own convenience). The DVDs are very good quality with little behind the scenes documentaries on several of the series. As usual a fantastic cast of the great and good of British (with the occasional American) acting, populate the casts of each episode.
A good investment for anyone who is a fan of Christie or the two brilliant actresses who have portrayed Miss Marple - Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie.

I bought this set for my mother but couldn't resist watching them too. Miss Marple is the ultimate sluth disguised as a little old interfearing bussybody. Just like Jessica Fletcher in the Murder She Wrote series, Miss Marple always seems to have friends, nephews and other distant relations who invite her around just when a murder is about happen. Usually she solves the crime with some last detail falling into place that us mere mortals have been too dim to catch on to. I never really tire of watching these even when I know who did it because they are timeless classics.

I just finished watching all 6 series, and loved them all. I had been prepared to not like Geraldine McEwan, but found myself liking her just as much as I liked Julia McKenzie. They are very different, but each is enjoyable in her own way. I haven't viewed any of the Joan Hickson versions in the past few years, so I didn't go into shock with the differences in actresses. Found all except 'Endless Night' to be very satisfying, even when the original novel was tampered with. As for 'Endless Night", it was trying throughout, hard to follow at times, and the so-called "ending" totally unsatisfactory.
Also, the clear, easy-to-read subtitles are much appreciated.

Brought it as I have watched it many times on tv and simply had to have it to watch whenever I feel like it. I just love both actors and their version on Miss Marple.

Really, really great. Both Geraldine and Julia are fantastic in their own different ways. With a top line up of supporting actors and involved stories this series is a hit from start to finish.
