I have used this to put all the AV add on equipment in a sideboard behind a solid wood door. The item is discrete and I am using it with an Apple TV Sky HD Plus 1TB box Samsung Blue ray and Sony surround sound amplifier. It came with a mains adapter which I was not expecting but I have put the required 4 AA batteries in as well. The main problem fitting these is finding where the IR eye is on the equipment. The way I found mine was to hold a very bright small LED torch flush against the plastic housing of the window where the IR receptors are hidden. This allowed me to identify the "eye" (a tiny small square Item with a blob of glass on it;s face and approximately 3-4mm across, and place the repeater accurately. This didn't work as well on the Apple TV as the window is almost opaque. For the apple TV I went to the apple website and looked at the picture to see where the IR receptor was, and placed it that way. of all the devices the apple works the least well and I suspect their diagram is not as accurate as it may be. The other items are perfect and work well with their individual remotes.

Good IR extender for in cabinet hi fi's

Fed up with leaving your cabinet doors open - this fixes it, I have 4 devices, apple TV, Virgin Cable, Panasonic Blue Ray and a Yamaha AV Amp, so the 4 way distribution on this product was ideal.
The product itself works flawlessly once you have the stick on transmitters positioned correctly, you can still operate remotes with the door open, the transmission time is not delayed, so you don't get a double press arriving at the device.

The one tip on using this is to research where the IR 'eyes' are on your devices, there is a lot of information on the Web for various boxes, the good news is that if you get it wrong, the pads are sticky enough to try again. Despite my re-trys, none of the pads have fallen off, even the one on the moving door of the Blue Ray player!!

Did the job perfectly. But be warned that there is a wired link between the extender kit's black box and the IR receiver point on your audio visual equipment. The maximum distance between the two is about 8 metres and you have to be able to run the wire where it can't be seen (through wall or cupboard back etc). It can also be difficult to locate the exact spot at which to attach the IR extender wire (via a very easy peel-off adhesive backing). With the hel of a good torch, it is usually locatable on an amp or set top box or DVD player; but in one case I had to look up the specific set-top box on-line and find a forum that told me the IR receiver was 4" to be found from the right hand edge!). Not insuperable, and obviously not the fault of of this IR Extender kit which has worked unfailingly and is well worth the money.

This IR extender sits on top of a sideboard which contains our DVD player and Sky box. It is fairly unobtrusive and is good in operation. There are two potential downsides which I consider immaterial: you have to run the cables from the receiver to the boxes such that they don't get in the way of loading DVDs etc., you also have stick the small IR transmitters (4 of them provided) exactly on the locations of the IR reception points on your boxes (DVD player, Sky box etc).

This is controlling an x-box, slingbox, dvd player and apple tv, all concealed within a cabinet that otherwise stops you controlling things easily. I hooked the slingbox remote control ir up to it too, so when controlling the thing i'm slinging this goes back through the extender and this works fine. Weirdly some things that were always difficult to control, the x-box and the atv, unless you point directly at them with the remote, are still hard to control unless you point directly at the extender.
So overall good value and works well.

I was disappointed that you need to put 4 AAA batteries in as well as plug it in the mains with a transformer! Then you really have to put it in line of sight of the remote, plus it's big, it would be better if you just had a tiny discreet magic eye. So I wouldn't really recommend it.

Plus it's too expensive.

My video equipment (4 devices) live close to floor level; between wherever I sit and these units are items of furniture. I got fed up with either stooping to fire the remote under the furniture, or raising my hand way above my head to control the equipment and pressing buttons 'til something happened. Setting up was a doddle. The receiver sits above the TV and is very sensitive. I now just aim any remote vaguely towards the TV and it does the job. Fantastic.
