There are no mundane recipes in this book. Rodgers’ dishes, both here and in her previous work, Supper Club, are always creative and inspiring. Knowing that she produces her food, solo from her Aga, helps persuade you they are achievable. Too often with cookbooks, especially those from chefs, once suspects that they never cook without a battalion of support staff lurking the background just out of camera shot.
She makes the more spectacular creations, such as the rainbow cake, or the gingerbread house, accessible by breaking down the recipe into step-by-step instructions, accompanied by admirably clear photographs.
Rodgers is generous in citing her inspirations, and Nigella’s name comes up frequently. Indeed, Secret Tea Party and How To Be a Domestic Goddess make perfect companions: Nigella’s book will take you deep into your comfort zone, while Secret Tea Party is designed to take you out of it and to be more adventurous.
The photography and illustrations are exquisite. It is a requirement of any cookbook for me that there should be some dishes you fall in love with at first sight, and so it is here: the Scandinavian biscuits photo’d in Arctic blue, or the long rectangular fig and chocolate tart which looks wonderfully sticky and gooey just sitting on the page.
Secret Tea Party is an ideal gift book – and one that the recipient is actually likely to cook from.
All the building blocks are there - how to lay the table, the little finishing touches that make all the difference - from home made spreads (sweet and savoury) to decorated sugar cubes (complete with home made wraps) and make your own teabags. As for the food - there are meringue swans, gingerbread houses, cupcakes baked in cups, exquisite champagne jellies decorated with homemade crystalised flowers, teapot cocktails, home made after eights, woodland apple pies decorated with a riot of pastry leaves, berries and flowers, unapologetically girly bakes such as a pastel and silver croquembouche, red and white shoe biscuits and French fancies. And as for the often neglected savouries - how about a "cakewich" - layers of sandwiches transformed into a savoury cake not too far removed from Mr McGregor's garden. It will bring out the inner child in you, or give you everything you need to create a sophisticated Claridge's style party.
I love this book. I loved it more when I realised what a family affair it was. The recipes and over all aesthetic created by Kerstin, her daughter helped with the styling, her mother providing lovely little illustrations. Kerstin has pulled off something quite rare - she's created a useful baking book which is totally original.
I also like the fact that this is is such a family affair.
This book is a sheer delight for afternoon tea lovers everywhere. But this book offers so many unique and fascinating ideas that raise afternoon teas to a mercurial level! My particular favourite is 'The Cakewich'. What a wonderful concept! A huge multi-layered sandwich fashioned as a cake. Love it. And Smartie sandwiches. How fantastic they look on an afternoon tea stand with all the colours twinkling inside. The cakes, tarts and sweet delights range from greengage tart to champagne rose jellies and are too numerous to mention but all gorgeous. The most important thing for me is that all the recipes are doable, failsafe and look exquisite. I follow Kerstin's blog - Ms Marmite Lover - and regularly receive lots of fascinating updates for fab recipes from her international travels. Shes a brilliant and entertaining writer too.
