A little Chaykin by numbers but an average Chaykin book is still ahead of the game. It is all there; sex, lingerie, violence, murder but just a little formulaic and thin on plot compared to the recent Century West or Black Kiss 2 perhaps showing the original source limitations - a monthly serialised strip. Still a great one for Chaykin fanatics like me and works well as a modern addition to the current crime comics scene. The art is stunning as always and a nice package.

HASH(0x8daf5180) out of 5 stars Gritty fun 28 Nov. 2012
By Alt - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Mark LaFarge has more marital problems than Tony Soprano. Unlike Tony, however, LaFarge's life is complicated by the fact that his wife doesn't know he's a crook. She enjoys living the good life but doesn't understand the odd hours that LaFarge keeps. LaFarge's problems worsen after he agrees to perform a hit for a client he doesn't know, and they become quite unmanageable when the client's father becomes upset with his son's choice of hit men. Meanwhile, a lady cop seeking to salvage her career is after LaFarge ... but that's the least of his problems.

Gritty should be Howard Chaykin's middle name. As always, his writing is tough, smart, and entertaining. The conclusion turns the story into a wild conspiracy theory, the sort of thing on which Chaykin thrives. It's out there, but it's fun. The entire story is fun. Gritty fun.

The art suits the story. Yeah, it's gritty. LaFarge has to be the hairiest, lumpiest crook ever to star in a graphic novel. He's a character I'd like to see again.
HASH(0x8daf2a8c) out of 5 stars Very nicely done!!! 18 Dec. 2012

The story is what drives this awesome book forward. I really liked the way it is written and the ending... NICE ending... Colors are great but the pencils lack a bit... just a bit. All in all, this is a great book to read and I highly recommend it.

HASH(0x8df6d918) out of 5 stars Great stuff! 14 Jan. 2013
By Engstrom Mikael - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Great art and story! My only complaint is the concept of coloring Chaykin's inks. This has been the case in many of his later works, and it makes the art more cartoony than it would have been if the inks had remained black. Also takes away some of his unique energy. Nevertheless; highly recommended!!!
