Book Description

A funny and inspiring alternative election manifesto by political activist and comedian Mark Thomas

About the Author

Mark Thomas has worked as a comedian for over twenty years. His activist, campaigning brand of comedy has been a thorn in the side of many politicians and corporations. He is one of a limited number of people to be awarded a UN Global Human Rights Defender Award and has also been awarded a Kurdish National Congress Medal of Honour amongst other citations. His three-year campaign to stop the building of the Ilisu damn in Turkey was ultimately successful and saved 78,000 Kurds from being displaced.

I bought this book on a whim (not from Amazon I should confess) as I very much enjoyed the Radio 4 comedy show that inspired it. I expected it to be funny (which it is, very!) but it is also an important call for us, the electorate to get off our backsides and start taking an interest in what our elected officials are doing. We elected them, they work of us! It's is a mandate from us to improve the lot of all the people in this country and not an opportunity for MPs (and others) to feather their own nests or climb in bed with big business. Hopefully this little book will make people think a bit more about how we use our votes come the next election but if not it will certainly make you laugh.

Mark Thomas is one of the UK's most intelligent and vitriolic left wing comedians, his comedy not only makes you laugh but it strikes a chord and makes you think. Despite all of this he tends to slip under the radar of the general public and is relatively unknown, but he's held in high regard by those familiar with his work.

The People's Manifesto is the product of a live tour which gathered ideas from the audience, the public proposals have been analysed and a sampled in this book. There's a mixture of both daft and serious policies, but whether you're reading a ridiculous proposal about what to do with dog poo or a quite serious item about holding referenda before going to war, the book tackles it intelligently.

It's a genuinely funny book but it's not scared to deal with the real issues beneath the initial statement. For example, the proposal to have all models selected at random from the electoral roll is one of the most amusing parts of the book, and it also recognises a valid social problem when it is presented as a solution to seeing unrealistic idealised images of the body. It explores the morality behind what it proposes, it isn't just a collection of comedic ideas - it's a dissection of modern culture and a lot if it actually seems sensible!

The satirical pages may well educate you too and bolster your political arsenal of facts and figures ready for arguments in the office/pub/living room - did you know for instance that in 2009 benefit cheats may well have cost the country around ÂŁ900 million whereas rich tax loop-hole abusers lost the UK around ÂŁ18.5 *billion*!

WHAT made this book even more attractive was I got if for less than a quid
Topics include:

Party manifestos should be legally binding

MPS shout not be paid wages, but loans - because they get highly paid jobs because of their Westminster connetion

Everyone should be given the day off on their birthday

Each topic is supported by arguments and facts
Some are not so logical
But others are spot-on
The birthday one asks, what if the birthday falls on a Sunday?
(What the people didn't ask was what if my birthday's on 29 Feb?)

This is for the Kindle edition of the Mark Thomas book, content wise this is a great read if a little short ( I read it in just over an hour). Funny and thought provoking, the peoples manifesto is a combination of funny little quips and great ideas.

The fact this is a short book makes the formatting of the kindle edition so annoying. The first letter of every chapter is on its own line and the formating of title pages should have been looked at so they don't spread over two pages. Lazy work from the publisher.

Mark Thomas gathers together the best of the audience suggestions as he toured Britain looking for evidence of what *really* should be in a political manifesto. He's selected the best ideas and given a few short paragraphs of commentary on each one, into a small pocket book.

It's a mixture of deadly serious and flippant, of obvious and unexpected, and of realistic and surreal. One moment it is an angry monologue about corrupt politicians, another it is suggesting that releasing goats into the House of Commons would be a good idea.

Generally it's a mixed bag, but mostly it's an expression of very good, sensible, humanist ideals- that are never going to happen in the current political climate.

A great little pocket book from Mark Thomas, full of interesting ideas, this makes an excellent coffee table / cistern read and is easy to dip into, but the depth and insight you normally get from Mark Thomas isn't crammed into these pages quite as much as I might have liked.

This is a great read which had me laughing out loud on several occasions. However, it is very short and you will be able to read it in a single sitting.

That said, you've probably paid ÂŁ3 for a comedy film on DVD which you would laugh at less than this so it's not all bad. You'll also learn some stuff as well.

That nice young man David Cameron keeps telling us he is going to 'consult the people' over policy and public sector cuts. Well he can save some time since Mark Thomas has done the hard work already, asking people at his gigs to come up with laws and publishing the results in this pocket-size booklet.

The result is truly inspired with 4x4 drivers, politicians' pay and the tabloid press been particualrly hard hit by the public's ire.

This manifesto probably won't amuse or amaze you if you buy The Daily Mail every day but for everyone else it's truly inspired reading. Perhaps like Mao's Little Red Book everyone in the country should get a copy - or at least every politician.
