Clever entertainment for children in all age groups.
Following the original "Mark The Mountain Guide" book published in 2008, this charming book gives us a further adventure in the mountains with lead character Mark and all of his alpine friends.
It's great fun ! With lots of facts and mountaineering information given in the book after the adventure with a huge cuckoo clock in the mountains, which again features amusing references, and names, like a mountain called "Applestrudelhorn". And clever detailed illustrations - such as the gang of friends flying off a cliff hanging on to the cuckoo clock. Of course, the expert Mountain Guide Mark is calmly studying his map, at the front of the flying machine.
There's a thoughtful page about mountain rescue, which like the other factual content, maintains the clear message for young readers. It did occur to me that many an adult reader would do well to heed the information in this book, and in its predecessor, about mountain safety, and use of map and compass. Mountain rescue workers will appreciate the safety messages imparted in the book.
In summary, great fun and facts from the team of writer Mark Seaton and illustrator Graham Philpot. Highly recommended.

Your child will not learn to read or use a compass from this book but it will get their interest and open the door for you to teach them about compasses. My 4.5 year old loves this story and loves the compass!
This book stands on its own as a good children's story whether you are interested in mountaineering or not. Epic!
The delightful "Mark the Mountain Guide" series continues with this, the second book. The Graham Philpot-drawn characters of Mark, the three little marmot mountaineers, Leo the Mountain Dog & their other friends turn out for another high alpine adventure, this time to deliver a large cuckoo clock to High Alp Village. Difficulties ensue long the way, requiring new mountain activities like river rafting & rock climbing to overcome.
As in the first book, a useful section at the end provides explanations of some of the techniques & phenomena encountered in the story. This book also includes a compass, so that budding mountaineers can practice navigation.
If you want your children to get excited about skiing or going to the mountains there are not many books around to inspire them. This one will!
